ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The BVI Football Association (BVIFA) along with the local football fraternity is mourning the death of Matthew D. Daly aka ‘Shorty’ described as a vociferous fan and avid supporter of the game in the Virgin Islands (VI).

55-year-old Daly, a well-known businessman died on September 10, 2020, after allegedly being shot multiple times to the head, sources told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO).

In the BVIFA, Daly held the position of Vice President and Public Relations Officer on the Management Council as well as being a member of the organizing committee for the hosting of the yearly Invitational Masters Tournament.

Shock & Sadness

Leading the tributes on behalf of the BVIFA, Treasurer and a Founder Member, as well as a Vice President of Old Madrid, Kenrik Grant, said the football community has been left in shock at the tragic news.

“It is with great shock and sadness that the Old Madrid Football Club received the news of the death of our brother and member Mr Mathew D. Daly or ‘Shorty’ as he is commonly called… He has been very active in the club on and off the field and he will be greatly missed,” Grant said.

The Vice President also recalled that Daly became active with the club when they formed the veteran’s team 'BVI Masters' to compete in a regional Veterans’ tournament in 2007.

“His passion for football would sometimes cause friction with the coach if he is substituted or not selected to play.”

Highly passionate about football

Meanwhile, Daly was described as well-groomed, punctual, very competitive and not shy in bringing attention to his abilities

“Old Madrid Football Club express our deepest condolences to the family and many friends of our brother Mathew Daly, and appeal to the public to give the police any assistance that can help to solve this horrific crime,” concluded Grant

Mr Daly was reportedly a father of 6 and also ran a food vending place close to a popular sports bar and nightclub in Free Bottom area.

Police said persons with any information related to the shooting incident are asked to contact Detective Inspector Vernon Larocque; directly on 368-9809 or via the Major Crime Investigation Team on 368-5682.

Am indeed saddened by the killing of Matthew Daley, words cannot express my sadness. I wish this didn't happened; he was very friendly and shows his willingness to support Grenadians and BVIlanders on a whole. Many condolences to the Family and friends. This is a tearful moment for me but there is a reward for every man according to his words. Hope the criminal is caught soonest.

So the last 2 murdered men lived or worked, about 1 mile apart. There is no such thing as coincidences. These killings seem connected.

Those two cases are not linked so don’t try to throw detectives off the trail.

Burrows looks like a personal inside job while Daly’s looks like a hit.

No one would come forward this is natural common sense. It seems like people live like kings and queens and trust me they sometimes die like dirty be neat our feet. Its not everything glitter is gold. Look how Matthew 'Shorty' live his life and who knows, there is more to this untold secret. May he rest in eternal life, for the killer or killers when god is ready for you trust it would be your worst time to asked for forgiveness.

Such a sad time. My condolences and prayers to the family. Tortola is so small and they can't find these people that are doing the shooting. In the states they find kills in 48 hours or less. Tortola needs to do something fast. With covid-19 they still out there killing people. I pray that God get the killer or killers and make them suffer like a possum where they bleed out till they die. Thos man has children mother father family. Its such a sad month last week was George whose gonna be next? The investigators needs to be working 24/7 on these cases. Customs needs to be patrolling the waters along with police. Who to say the person didn't snuck in on the island.
