BVIBF wraps up another local referee training clinic

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Following the successful hosting of a February 8, 2020, basketball referee training clinic, President of the BVI Basketball Federation (BVIBF), Mr Derrick R. Varlack is keeping up efforts to train local referees in the sport.

Today Saturday, February 29, 2020, the Federation concluded yet another referee training clinic to build the pool of referees in the Territory and on hand to facilitate the training was Basketball National Instructor Mr Freddie Brown of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

The 3-day training started from Thursday, February 27, 2020, and ended today Saturday, February 29, 2020, at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, in Road Town on the main island of Tortola.

Brown was impressed

Speaking exclusively with our news centre, trainer Mr Brown said he was happy to have been invited by the Federation and its President to conduct the clinic for local referees.

Mr Brown, who is also the Basketball Technical Vice President of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC), comes to the table with vast experience having conducted similar clinics in Trinidad, Guyana, Antigua and neighbouring United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

When asked what was the main objectives of the Basketball referees' clinic, Mr Brown said, “I wanted participants to be aware of all the rules of the game, along with other technical  aspects.” 

He said he was also impressed with, the participants and the level of interest and assisting Mr Brown at the event was local International Basketball Federation (FIBA) certified referee Mr Norville A. Young as one of the many goals of the BVIBF is to build a pool of referees according to President Varlack.

Local referees suspended

Currently, most of the local referees are suspended for their unsportsmanlike boycott last year in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League where they refused to referee because they reportedly disagreed with the decision of the League on a player who was involved in an altercation.    

Local Basketball fans have said that there is a renewed level of interest in Basketball in the territory with a current League happening in North Sound, Virgin Gorda and a tournament in Road Town at the Sports Complex.
