BVIAA contradicts Premier Smith on legal action against BVI Airways
The airline, prior to its rejuvenation as a result of foreign investors, owed the BVI Airports Authority some $112, 000 in fees dating back to around 2013.
Senior Opposition Member Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1), during the February 4, 2016 Sixth Sitting of the First Session of the Third House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands had asked Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith what provisions have been made for the payment of all outstanding fees by BVI Airways to the BVIAA or Central Government?
Premier Smith had said BVI Airways owes the BVI Airports Authority the total sum of $112, 403.40 and that legal action was being sought to recover the funds.
“Madam Speaker, the BVI Airports Authority has taken a decision to engage their legal representatives to recover the funds owed by BVI Airways,” Premier Smith had said.
He had also stated that the BVI Airports Authority is uncertain of when the balance owed will be paid.
No active or pending legal action against BVI Airways
In a press release from the BVI Airports Authority today, February 9, 2016, it was stated that there are no legal actions against BVI Airways.
“The BVI Airports Authority Ltd hereby advises that, presently, it has no active or pending legal action against BVI Airways. A previous action, however, had been brought in late 2014, which has been satisfactorily resolved,” the press release stated.
There has been a public outcry about government’s move to subsidise BVI Airways to the tune of $7 million of taxpayers’ dollars, even while the airline owes them money, and not doing the same for locally owned airlines and ferry services.
It was also unearthed in the House of Assembly that the NDP Government has already paid $500,000.00 of taxpayers' money of the $7 Million promised to BVI Airways.

With no accounts, no census, pretty much no information on anything and the information we have incorrect or inaccurate it is hard to think anyone is Governing the country.
This is an SOS from the BVI
Location seven miles off the coast on St Thomas
SOS! SOS! Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!
Help! Help!
Chorus
Captain this ship is sinking
Captain these seas are rough, oh yes
We gas tank almost empty
No electricity, we oil pressure reading low
Shall we abandon ship
Or shall we stay on it and perish slow
We doh know, we doh know
Captain you tell we what to do
