ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI held on for a nerve jangling, edge of your seat, nail biting win 81-77 over Barbados on Wednesday July 2, 2014 to capture their second victory of the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championship being played at the Multipurpose Sports Complex.

The last game of the second day of the 2014 CBC Championship saw the Host Country control the pace of the game from the initial jump and take a lead of 25-10 into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the team led by Coach Keith ‘88’ Malone expanded their lead to 20 points at, 47-27, with Kennedy H. Bass, Halstead “JR” Chiverton and Randy “Chino” George being the best scorers. However in the second half Barbados adjusted to a full court defense and gradually began to claw back the deficit.

With 1 minute to play of the third quarter, the advantage was down to just 10 points and by the end of the quarter the score was 62-53.

Barbados entered the fourth quarter with an offensive streak and after a triple by Keefe Birkett and were within a point before the BVI responded from the hands of Randy George. From that point the teams traded the lead on the scoreboard, until BVI created a streak that started with a triple from Chiverton.

With 20 seconds to go, the BVI had a lead of 5 points, 79 - 74. On the next play, Barbados lost the ball and from the free-throw line, Chiverton calmed the crowd to give his team the victory it thoroughly deserved.

The best scorer for BVI was Randy George with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Chiverton notched 15 and was pleased he and the team had shown great spirit to hold on for the win.

“This victory was so important as we are trying to win the Championship and get the gold medal. Even though we gave up the twenty point lead it shows we have heart and stick together as a team no matter what. I would take a four point win over a loss anytime, a win is a win,” said Chiverton.

Coach Keith “88” Malone was also thankful his team had come through the late barrage from Barbados.

“We just had to remain poised, we got a bit rattled when Barbados came out with a charge, but we held on. Certain things happened, we got into some foul trouble, had to make some rotations and weren’t able to run our plays, but we will make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Bass finished with 14 points and 6 assists, whilst for Barbados Akeem Marsh hit 21 points, Keefe Birkett 12 and Ramon Simmonds 11.

Next up for the BVI is a local derby against the USVI which is a game filled with intense rivalry and shouldn’t be missed by Basketball fans at any cost.

In other games yesterday the USVI beat Guyana, 95-75, Antigua pulled off a famous 90-68 win over the Bahamas and Cuba maintained their perfect start with an 86-58 rout of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

coach is sitting behind the bench need to let the coaches sitting on the bench coach except for yellow. Lol.

When the game got tight they were panicking. what made them think that Leslie should have been put back in the game when he was playing bad he should have never gotten back on the court because he was playing so selfishly well everyone else was trying to play team basketball.

in tonight's game I'm going to sit behind the bench again because
Thats where all the real action is
