ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The BVI Tourist Board is encouraging all organisations, businesses, schools, churches, clubs and groups to join an Island-Wide Clean Up on the islands of Tortola and Anegada.

The Tortola leg of the cleanup will be on Saturday April 26, 2014 and Sunday April 27, 2014. The Anegada leg is on Friday May 30, 2014 and Saturday May 31, 2014. For each island clean up, the starting time will be between 6.30 and 9.30 am on the designated days.

According to a bulletin from the Board, the initiative is aimed at bringing community together on each island to address the amount of litter that is strewn throughout Tortola and Anegada, and to raise awareness about the environment, cleanliness, and beautification of the islands’ neighborhoods, parks, beaches and areas of leisure.

“In addition to volunteers, we are also accepting donations of trucking services, drinking water, garbage bags and gloves,” the bulletin said.

Some weeks ago a similar exercise took place on the island of Virgin Gorda.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online today April 9, 2014, Senior Environmental Officer of the BVI Tourist Board Ms Sasha D. A. Flax said that there has been an increase in littering on the islands and this led to the planning of the exercises. “It needed to be done,” she said. “There has been an increase in litter and we are trying to put a stop to it. They is why we are organizing the cleanup,” she said.

“I think people need to realize that all we are here in the BVI is out natural resources and we need to preserve them by any means necessary,” said Ms Flax.

If only people would learn. Only last week there was a voluntary beach clean up at Smugglers. Later that afternoon, there was a party at the old snack bar. I personally donated two plastic garbage bags and a box for trash. Came down the next day and the trash was everywhere. The bags were not used. Ironically, the person I talked to said he was part of the clean-up and "I didn't have to worry about him". Where is the example and how do we change these mind sets?? come on people. It is not the visitors messing. They are used to recycling and throwing trash in containers. It is all on YOU!!
