VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – After several previous attempts residents of the Virgin Gorda community are quite confident they have got it right with the formation of the Virgin Gorda branch of the BVI Cancer Society.

This was signed, sealed and executed last evening February 22, 2014 when a sizable group of residents of the Island met in the presence of senior executives of the BVI Cancer Society headed by its President Ms Gloria Fahie for the official election of officer bearers.

“Today we are raising the bar in the beautiful Virgin Gorda,” said President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria Fahie at the official launch of the committee. She said that it was last October 2013, that residents of Virgin Gorda approached her and expressed a deep passion to be part of the Breast Cancer Walk/Run.

Ms Fahie took special time out to emphasize the importance of advocacy, service and volunteerism that are some of the key characteristics of being a part of the organization. She noted that it is appalling that the number of cancer cases are expected to surge 57% worldwide in the next 20 years, something she described as an imminent “human disaster” that will require a renewed focus on prevention to combat, according to the World Health Organization.

“The world cancer report produced on World Cancer Day predicts new cancer cases will raise to the 22 million within two decades. Over that same period, cancer deaths are predicted to rise from 8.2 million a year to 13 million,” she told the group.

Ms Deborah Bruce who was last night elected president of the Virgin Gorda branch of the BVI Cancer Society was hailed as a champion. She had led an initiative with the involvement of the Youth Envisionnaires of the St. Ursula Catholic Church - a fund raiser that saw a significant amount monies going into the coffers for the cause of cancer.

The other members elected to offices were Vice President Ms Shailene Thomas, Public Relations Officer Yvette Faulkner-Grant, Treasurer Ms Hyacinth Telemaque, Secretary Amy Riddlestorffer, Assistant Secretary Lorraine Walters and Ex Officio Member Arlyn Gordon.

The committee has pledged take on a number of initiatives head on. They are looking at a massive event of colours for the summer season.

This are wonderful news.Congrats to the VG team. It would have been nice if the general membership of the Tortola branch would have been informed and able to come to support the new branch as well

If all you would come the meetings, you would know what going on. Members were asked to go to VG with her. It is alright for Gloria to be in the spotlight she works hard for the society and goes the extra mile to keep the Society active. Besides information shared at meetings, e-mails are sent out to members.

I wish that background checks would be performed before persons vote. How can people who don't like people lead people? All due respect, good cause, but wrong individual to head such a great cause.

I swear that this has become Gloria Cancer Society instead of BVI Cancer Society. Why wasn't the general membership not informed of this meeting????

@Bvi The usual thing, everybody wants the spotlight. There is no I in team therefore it should be a team effort, not Gloria only, it is BVI Cancer Society not G F Cancer Society. Ms. Fahie I suggest you start involving the membership in those events, they too work hard and it would be nice to share the spotlight.
