ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- In an unprecedented move in the history of basketball in the Virgin Islands, the BVI Basketball Federation which hosts one of the biggest basketball leagues every year on Tortola has cancelled its 2015 League.

Coming out of a BVI Basketball Federation Executive meeting held on April 24, 2015, a decision was made to cancel the League because of lack of participation, according to a Federation press release.

As of the deadline for registration, the League was only able to muster a total of 5 rosters (3 junior & 2 senior).

A few weeks ago, the League announced that it will start on May 9, 2015.

This will be the first time since 2001 that the League was cancelled. In 2001 it was postponed because of the construction of the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

Is basketball dying in the VI?

It appears that most of the basketball leagues are facing challenges. Last year, for the first time in its history, the Virgin Gorda Basketball League’s Summer Jam was cancelled. It was blamed on the construction of a new gym. The status of the construction remains unknown.

Last year also saw the cancellation of the 7th and 8th Districts’ Basketball Leagues. In addition, the Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines X-mas Basketball League was also cancelled.

However, one Basketball League that is going strong now is the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League, now in its third year. They have already announced a start date of August 15, 2015, registration deadline, along with the return of the draft system for local elite basketball players. Sources close to that League said they are expecting some 20 senior teams this year, up from 18 last year and another 7 junior teams.

Something in July!

To save face, the BVI Basketball Federation will try for a scaled back event by hosting a Grand Knock-Out Summer Tournament in July, just after the conclusion of the CBC Tournaments. There will be a maximum of 8 teams and a minimum of 6 teams in each division. Awards and prizes will be given out immediately following its conclusion.

The Federation, according to its press release, promised more information.

BVI people don't care about things that don't involve money anymore. Who is in charge of basketball? wow.

Them LIE they don't want to host the league anymore.....so they blame it on no registration. but let us be honest here......the CBC tournament is coming up in less than 5 weeks. We entered a male and female team int the competition; All persons involved in the 2 team are either coaching or players for the league; when will they haave time to work out or practice their teams.......
All they have to do is every Saturday and Sunday open the damn gym to the basketball players and play 2 - 3 games

This will be the second year it seems that there will be no summer jam basketball tournament. The so called gym isn't done and I feel it was not thoroughly planned.

From the first time I saw that building, I knew it was never going to work out as a basketball gym. And I'm not just sayin this just cause. I know it is much needed in VG but when people don't listen and think they know it all, then is when you realize that the higher heads don't have a clue on certain things. Experience is a heck of a teacher..IJS

I remembered Devon Osborne saying that the Minister who is trying to outdo his peers is NOT good for sports. I guess he was right after all.

        Who don't hear will feel.

I sure if they did some research the V.I has the most leagues in the word. As soon as one finish another league starts. There’s never an offseason, save the seed have so many tournaments that I don’t know when one ends and the other begins

I agree that Fahie and Juggy are better at dealing with youth and sports than they are at politics. Why not get them doing that full time instead of wasting time in politics. They were both elected last time around, what did they do for basketball then? I will give Fahie and juggy, especially Juggy their jacket because I know he did great things especially helping to get many of our young men to attend colleges overseas to play ball. Perhaps they should focus on such things and not politics. People seem to think that to make a difference you need to be a politician and that's farthest from the truth.

I THINK THE REASON WHY TEAMS DRAGGED THEIR FEET ON SUBMITTING THE ROSTERS IS DUE TO HOW BORING THIS PARTICULAR LEAGUE HAS BECOME. SAVE THE SEED LEAGUE IS MORE INTERESTING; AND THAT SHOULD NOT BE. THIS LEAGUE USE TO BE EVERYTHING, EVERYBODY COULDN'T WAIT FOR IT TO STOP. NOW, NOBODY EVEN THINKS OF IT. I THINK THE WHOLE ASSOCIATION NEEDS A REVAMP WITH NEW IDEAS AND DIRECTION.
    • Bball (28/04/2015, 12:40) Like (8) Dislike (0) Reply
Exactly! Everybody looking to cast blame but there must be a reason the teams signing up for Save the Seed and not this main league. Put the blame where it belongs, if the association can't manage it, elect a new set who can move it forward. Basketball isn't dead, the association is what's dead.

BVI is too small to have 2 major basketball leagues. Fact is because of the Save the Seed there is no interest in normal league.

It's not the government & it's not that there's too many leagues. We can't get the communities to form teams and can't get the ball players who play up the hill to participate. So going to watch one good team and 3 bad teams is boring, but for some reason the good players have no interest. And there are some good local players who are not even invited to the national team. One team might have a ton of national team players and no other team has any. Back when the participation was good, there were teams from West East Town & Country VG & Rock. Now u have mixed up teams from no where so no community interest. Funny how basketball went backwards after we got a gym.

The difference with Juggie Maestro Big Leo and that era is that they used to be on the court with the players year round. Chat with them, and knew who were who talent wise, team wise etc. Knew their concerns and cares now it's a lot more exclusive and elusive. Of course that was easier when everyone had access to the big court in town now they have a gym that no one can play in.
