ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This news site had first and accurately reported on January 11, 2016 that BVI Airways, which Government was seeking to subsidise, had owed monies to the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) prior to discontinuing its service at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport in 2014. And, according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith, monies owed by BVI Airways for landing fees to the BVIAA will be dealt with and have not been written off.

Dr Smith was speaking to members of the media on Tuesday January 12, 2016 following the launch of BVI Airways’ new direct service between Beef Island and Miami International Airport starting in the fall of this year 2016.

The airline, prior to its rejuvenation as a result of foreign investors, owed the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) landing fees dating back to around 2013.

Some of the same players who took over after the airline stopped operations in 2014 will be involved again, according to our newsroom’s National Democratic Party (NDP) senior sources close to the discussion at the Premier’s Office.

When asked what will become of the outstanding balance owed to the airport, Premier Smith said, “This is something that will be dealt with between the airline and the BVI Airports Authority.”

Premier Smith did not disclose how much is owed in landing fees by BVI Airways to the BVIAA.

There has already been a public outcry about government’s move to subsidise the airline to the tune of $7 million of taxpayers’ dollars and not doing the same for locally owned airlines and ferry services.

While there are speculations as to who locally is involved in the airline’s return, BVI Tourist Board Chairman Russel Harrigan has been the point person with the negotiations, according to the same senior NDP source.

Mr Harrigan’s involvement beyond the negotiations remains unknown at this time.

Government said it hopes to recoup the money from BVI Airways within the three-year agreement even though there is no guarantee concerning the number of people who will be travelling on the 86-seater small passenger jet.

BVI Airways also hopes to start services to the United States Eastern Seaboard, however, this is contingent on the lengthening of the runway at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport at Beef Island to accommodate larger, longer-range aircraft.

How much does BVI Airways owe BVIAPA? Why is this a secret and does not the people need to know? The BVI is heading off the cliif with all the secrecy. Did BVI Airways run off without paying its debt but is now a good risk for forking over $7M of scarce tax payer $$$$? Will the debt owed the BVIAPA be paid out of the $7M? By the way, why does a small 2X4 locale needs two separate port authorities? There should be one port authority.

From 2013 is a long time to have this debt outstanding. What if this deal did not happen? It would appear that they had no intention of paying it off. We need to keep on top of this and make sure that the Airport Authority is paid. VINO, you all should find out for the public exactly how much this debt is because I don't trust the government to let the public know. In my personal opinion, whatever the debt amount is, it should come from the $7million. However, I am confident the government did not negotiate this. We are in some deep $hi+ in these BVIs.

Be more responsible with tax payers money for God sake... That 7 million dollars can be divided into 7. Each tourist attracting event get a million..we get 7 times the return. I will name a few 1/ spring regatta. 2/ music festival. 3/ August festival. 4/ Farming and farming incentives. 5,/Horse racing.. 6 (new) Swimming and Gospel fest.. 7/ someone else will decide.. Put in place a financial controller for every entity that government gave money to.. I'm the premier for a month. Thats the way it will happened.

This government needs to be scrapped and a new election called. Why is Russell negotiating for an airline? Tell us who are involved or we would ask the us to investigate. How much money is going into healthcare?

Yep! Call a new Election now. This is one time NDP should listen. There is no competitor so might as well get it over with and give NDP the additional 4 years which is guaranteed, now or later.

You freeloaders owe 30million dollars plus in unpaid medical bills. Pay that and then worry about a paltry sum owed by some private and foreign entity who has more than enough collateral.

Who will pay your delinquent $30 million dollars? Such an exhorbitant amount cannot be ignored .
It will be paid so let that be your concern.

I heard that the Cuban and funny man had a fist fight because funny man told the Cuban that the last time he did anything in long look was when Ralph give him the money to spend on the Stickette. They say that the Cuban got a good right hook to funny man jaw then funny man responded with a few kicks before they fell to the floor. It was only when the Cuban got on top the rumble was parted. Stay tuned for the cage match.

When he said it would be dealt with, he meant it would be swept under the rug? That's the only way it could be dealt with

  • Insolvent? (19/01/2016, 22:18) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Why did the government not use the courts to enforce the debts? Appoint an insolvency practitioner to investigate and get remaining value out for the company. Simply corruption or just incompetence? There may be little there as the plane and other items may have been leased but the public ought to know.

Is this all in a new corporate entity to the old one? If the same company, the debt should be negotiated and paid but not from the public purse without due consideration. Lest the ministers and executives involved fall fouls of FCPA or Bribery Act etc.
