BEEF ISLAND, VI – Well known car enthusiasts Street Kings Auto Club on Sunday December 27, 2015 made a donation of cash to one of their followers to help with medical expenses.

The young man, Naresh V. Gobardhan, back in September 2015 suffered second and third degree burns while at a welding shop assisting with the repair of an auto part.

The presentation was made at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island during the Street Kings Auto Club’s first annual Christmas lime.

“We had a fundraiser a few weeks ago in the form of a six-over cricket match at Greenland field along with a barbeque and we decided to donate some of those funds to Naresh,” said Rodney S. Beharry, President of the Street Kings Auto Club.

“What happened is that he was burned in an accident that happened on Tortola and he had to go to Puerto Rico for treatment. We said that we had to assist in whatever way because a lot of money was spent on his part for his medical expenses and this is just to give him something out of the club for him to get back on his feet,” said Beharry.

Beharry describes Gobardhan as a friend and future member of the club. “He had started to come to some meetings and this is why we choose to do this for him,” he said. “He is a person close to the club and he supported our events in the past.”

“Despite we had a blackout during the game we decided to help him out especially for the Christmas season,” said Beharry.

The Street Kings Auto Club is a non-profit organisation registered by the Government of the Virgin Islands.

On the road to recovery

Speaking with this news site following the presentation from the Auto Club, Gobardhan said he was burned in an accident on September 8, 2015 while at a welding shop.

“I am an employee at Alphonso Enterprise so I was given instructions to take a part to the welding shop so it could get welded. When I took the part at around 4:30 pm that day, the guy was welding it and it caught fire,” he said.

“Persons there tried to [douse the fire] but there was gas in a bottle which should have contained coolant and when one of the guys throw it, it flared up more and caught me and I got burned,” Gobardhan explained.

He said he suffered second and third degree burns to his right hand, right side and some scorching to his face.

“I went to Puerto Rico on a [visa waiver] for treatment,” he said.

According to him, the doctor advised him that while he could return to work, he must not place a lot of pressure on the hand. He is also undergoing therapy for the burn injuries.

Gobardhan is still in the process of dealing with the legal side of things with regard to compensation for his medical expenses but did not want to specify for fear of the process being derailed.
