ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Some private businesses and Government departments were forced to close early yesterday, December 16, 2015 due to a water shortage brought on by a broken main pipe line on De Castro Street in the vicinity of Scotiabank.

According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the pipe line was broken the night before during road works being executed in the area.

The water disruption came at a particularly ill-opportune time since two cruise vessels were in harbour and the rest room facility at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park had to be closed.

Sometime after noon yesterday, December 16, 2015 workers were seen frantically working to get the line fixed, which also resulted in the traffic flow being affected in that area.

From all indications it appeared as the pipeline was fixed late yesterday but efforts by this news site to get a confirmation from the Water and Sewerage Department were not successful.

It wasn't a broken pipe, it was a needlessly damaged pipe! Who dug up the road there? There wasn't any notices on the road. I was there Tuesday evening and everyone was turning around when they got to the bank.

Who was in charge, where were the supervisors? They had a huge cutting machine and plainly hadn't checked what was under that road. Neglect rather than a accident. Imagine if you were a business, hotel or restaurant in the area and had no water!

Online now, you should check your facts before opening your mouth. Water and Sewerage was asked to provide a mapping of all their pipes in the area. They did not. The pipe was placed near the surface of the road when it should have been several feet deep. There was no way of knowing that it was there, and the works had to be carried out. The incident is unfortunate, but until utility agencies observe regulation procedures for pipe laying we will continue to have damaged pipes, broken pipes, wasted water, power outages and an inconvenienced public.
