Britain integrating us into the UK – Doug Wheatley

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Host of the radio talk show programme, Speak Out BVI, Doug Wheatley, believes that Britain is slowly integrating us into the UK.

The host made this statement during his programme which was aired on a local radio station aired on September 11, 2012.

“It is my contention,” the host said “that Britain is slowly, perhaps ever so slowly, integrating us into the UK.” Wheatley felt this was as a result of talk being made about the VI being within the British family and part of the realm, etc.

Britain knows, the talk show host added, that if we do not exercise our right to self-determination with respect to independence and free association, that they would then have to do the only logical thing which would be available to them. This, he noted, would mean having a much closer relationship with the UK.

Wheatley felt that we were already seeing the foundations of that being laid.

Earlier in the programme, the talk show host expressed that the VI has only three options to consider concerning its status.

He outlined that these were independence, free association and integration. “Down the road, we have to consider which of the three options we will take,” Wheatley suggested.

“Independence of course is not the only option, but it is one, free association is the other and integration into the UK is a third option.”

Wheatley made reference to the Wallace Commission on independence (1993) while also reviewing the work done by the constitutional commission he had previously chaired. The commission dealt with the breadth and depth in constitutional authority which was to further enable the people of the Virgin Islands the means to pursue their social and economic aspirations.

He noted that the NDP had been consistent, as they were in their last period in office, about not approaching the UK with regard to Independence. “At that point in 2004/2005, [the NDP government] made it clear, crystal clear, that they were not interested in independence.”

Wheatley impressed that it was important for the Premier to indicate whether or not his cabinet had had a new or different look at independence and were now changing their position from that which was stated in 2004/2005.

“The Premier has clarified that there is no change,” he said in reference to a question asked by Hon. Andrew A Fahie at the first sitting of the second session of the Second House of Assembly held on September3, 2012.

So am I. I'm all for it. Independence for the BVI means No Regulation, no Rules of conduct for our Government and OUR money. Quite frankly, I don't trust my own people to run my government. Straight up.

      @ Richard & Migoman

For those of you who are for integration I believe you should be cast out< I would bet my right hand that you are either white or very young and have no clue about slavery and the ills that followed!!!!

You don't trust VIlanders to elect a govt for the people and by the people, to govtrn in a way that would see your people do well, but you trust the white man. " His history is right there clear for you to see, but you trust him. Casting you out isn't really what I feel, to be honest its much worse!!!!!

          @ Really

Let me tell you fools who like to justify what was done by the white man by claiming africa/african sold us into slavery. Every race enslaved their own and sold their own, slavery was a mean of commerce. However the deliberate destrustion of a people and a country is some thing esle. We as African are dealing with the repercussion of such actions. We are viewed around the world as devils with nothing to offer the world but ills. Classic ..."Black" or "Dark", words that have no innate evils but are used often to represent such. yes a dark night may make it impossible to see and I can accept the usage of the word dark to represent an unclear future etc. However we weren't design to function in the night, the dark night was meant for rest and recovery, just like the dark womb that kept you safe.

We as black people need to function like the other people of the world and become less trusting of NOn Us. we need to become as aggressive in the persuit of our own future. Segregate segregate segregate all For it!!!!!

I remember as a young child not yet in my teens learning of christopher columbus and the indians in the caribbean but nothing of my own. I remember thinking what did we do what did the people who look like me accomplish, in class 4 it was made clear why I had NO Glorious history, no black person to look up to. slavery and all its IllS was the culprit.

Stop Your Crap or brand this on yourself forehead " I am All for White Power & Black Destruction" So people like me will be able to tell who we can trust!!!

            @Angry Black Man

None of the races are innocent. Blacks and Arabs sold Blacks. Whites bought Blacks. All races including Blacks discriminate against Blacks. We are all evil. And at this time, the Whites have the upper hand. But that will eventually change as the world becomes more integrated.

That said...it now is a matter of organization and productivity. It is clear that our local black elected officials are lazy and corrupt. And our own people cannot resist begging for handouts or having the islands looking like a dump. No amount of African pride or angry speeches by persons like you can change those facts.

Until we become more responsible and resourceful we would be better off being integrated, or staying as we are. As of 2012, we cannot govern ourselves to the standards of other larger countries such as the UK. We are not ready for the kind of independence that leads to prosperity.

Doug, you really think the UK want us? I doubt it. Arms length is where they have us and where we they want to keep us. That way they can claim we do things WITHOUT their say-so (like launder dirty money) because we elect our own legislature, and at the same time have their say-so whenever they want.
Question is - is there a better solution for us? I don't see it.

And to the commenter name 'dude' - you dreaming. Africa is and always was a harsh place, just like the rest of the world is harsh. Don't go fooling yourself that Africans didn't sell Africans into slavery, that they have done through time and they are still doing it now. You have an Africa fantasy? Go move to Mauritania where slavery exists right now, today. Some of all you need to cut the fantasy cr*p and let's get on with figuring out our future. The more nonsense in the equation, the more skewed up we will become.

Hearing about the introduction of VAT in the Turks and Caicos, made me wonder that same thing. Keeping a semblance of stability around our integral role in the maintenance of the status quo for the world financial system made me think the same thing. You could be right Dougie....

But dey gonna to find a lot of trouble on de plate if they try and force anyting

The airport will enable the little country to be taken over in a flash. When we bring in all these people do you know what RoadTown is going to smell like we cannot even manage our own **** and we want to build an airport ? How about a steady water supply and sewage managment. Independent ? I don't think so we cannot take care of ourselves as it stands !

Much colonial and postcolonial theory has exhibited a tendency to see colonial power as an all-embracing, transhistorical force, controlling and transforming every aspect of colonised societies...doug you need to read some of the new infromtion on this topic!
