ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A teacher at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre and award recipient for the Teacher of the Year prize, Mr Lyn Weekes, collapsed suddenly at the Teacher Awards ceremony this evening, March 15, 2014.

Weekes had to be rushed to the Peebles Hospital and was in a semi-conscious state at the time. The event was held at the Cutlass Towers Building in Road Town and was hosted by the Department of Education. It is the second annual Teachers Award ceremony.

Weekes was in high spirits earlier and considered by some as being a livewire during the awards ceremony tonight.

His condition was not listed as critical up to post time and he is currently receiving medical attention at the medical institution.

The Bregado Flax Educational Centre won the School of the Year award for the Secondary division.

If the Minister critics were not so evil the teachers would have been at a sit down dinner. Some teacher were complaining of sore feet standing in those High heel shoes. Perhaps Mr. Weeks was overwhelmed in the heat and fainted. WHo are the critics going to blame? The Minister. People are like crabs in a barrel. Everythinh the Minister does he is critized left right and center. Give the man some credit. He is doing his best.

@ straight gaff.....Really? cocktail party, village, show, or teacher's reception .... the choice of footwear is up to the individual, wear comfortable shoes. While I am all for rewarding the teachers, its a waste of our hard earned tax payers revenue. First off, education is a profession that has hundreds of teachers to cater to...Second, what about other professions that fall under the Education and Culture umbrella, are we going to make this a standard way of recognizing persons? BVI or elsewhere, individual or group people will be criticised. In the minister's case he is being criticised for the decisions that he has made especially for a man whose profession is a lawyer. Third, always remember, whether we (people in general) like something or not, support a decision or not...it is always in our best interest to make worthwhile decisions. So if the venue was hot...sense alone go outside and get some fresh air. If you were in a sh...y bathroom would you stay or leave?

However, I do pray his condition is minor and wish him a speedy recovery.

The Minister tried to raise the consciousness of teachers by giving dem a sumptuous dinner under elegant setting last year and the critics had him up in arms. When the Governor has his gala affair for the white people, nobody complains. Is it because we are still in the shackles of colonialism and our mentality is as small as our island? What a shame to see the Doctors of Education, the Attorney General, other high ranking officers in the Ministry of Education and the wider society dressed in (men) jacket and tie( women) in their costly array standing in a two hour session. All because we cannot deal with a bit of sophisticated affair for our people. What a shame. We prefer to use the money an dbuild wastless walls and nobody complains. If i were the Minister I will put them under a tent next time with no trappings. We are an UNGRATEFUL SOCIETY.
