NORTH SOUND, Virgin Gorda, VI – The Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC) wrapped up celebrations in observance of its 30th Anniversary on the evening of Saturday, January 19, 2013. The Honourary dinner was held at the Top of The Baths Restaurant in Virgin Gorda.

Seven members of the Class of 1984 offered reflections during the dinner while Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, as well as former Premier and Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE gave remarks.

Principal of the Primary Division of the BFEC and Chair of the Coordinating Committe of the anniversary celebrations, Mr Hilroy George, related that Hon. Walwyn spoke about the number of doctors, lawyers and politicians that the school had produced over the years among other things.

The theme for this year was “An Oasis of Knowledge: Past, Present, Future.”. There was also a church service held at the Sanctuary of Hope New Testament Church of God in Valley, Virgin Gorda on November 18, 2012.

“We don’t have anything planned for the remainder of the school year,” Mr George said.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr Marcia Potter, gave remarks during the church service o behalf of Hon. Walwyn while Bishop Kenneth Hodge, a former valedictorian at the school, led the sermon at the ceremony.

According to a release sent by the Government Information Service, the doors of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre opened in May 1982 under the pioneering efforts of the then Chief Minister, the late Honourable H. Lavity Stoutt, the district representative and present Leader of the Opposition Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE and the then Chief Education Officer Dr. Charles Wheatley.

The school was named in honour of the late James Alfred Bregado Flax, a long serving educator who served as the first headmaster of the North Sound Methodist School and was an educator for over 20 years. He was honoured by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, as a Member of the British Empire (MBE).
