ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Political and social commentator Alred C. Frett is calling on the territory to boycott the upcoming general elections on June 8, 2015, saying that people would be signing their own death warrants if they support such a move.

“The people of the territory have been carefully positioned to lose, because of the shortness of the time to prepare and the ability of one side to present things that the other side would have no ability to address,” said Frett on his Saturday evening programme Truth for the Youth on ZROD 103.7 FM today May 9, 2015, as he made reference to the snap elections called by Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith just a month and two days ahead of the June 8, 2015 general elections date.

Snap elections a no-win for the people

He called the boycott of the snap elections the one chance that the people have of winning, since, “It is a rigged elections designed to involve people of their own destruction.”

He said that the deck would remain stacked in the favour of government who calls snap elections, which he called “legalised corruption” and said that anyone condoning this is a sponsor of corrupt government.

Signing your own death warrant

“You would be signing your name to your own death warrant. You have got to be an idiot! The only choice at this time for the people to win is for them not to participate in their own destruction,” he said, referring to the boycott that he called for.

“This is a sad crossroad when we have to choose not to do in order to get done,” he said. He called it suicidal for people to support the snap elections.

“It is only by boycotting that we the people could maintain the credibility that we need to address problems in the future,” he said.

Running as Territorial/At Large

Some weeks ago, Frett announced his intention to run as a Territorial/At Large candidate for the elections and speaking to this news site today he further confirmed his decision.

He, however, was keen on letting the electorate know that they have the power to stop the ruling Natonal Democratic Party (NDP) government of taking advantage of them.

“We can see things happening where we could recognise the forthrightness and double standards. Our people are being wilfully misled,” said Frett. “To believe that Social Security is not at risk is foolish…you have the choice to save yourselves or lose it all,” he said, touting his proposed boycott of the elections.

“We are in a deficit…everything being done is done to benefit those who already have and not those in need. We must provide affordable health care, bring back education,” he said, as he pointed to some of the burning issues that should be of concern to the voters.

He called the Westminster system of government a traditionally corrupt system where ministers remain after parliament is dissolved so they can collect salaries while campaigning for the elections at the taxpayers’ expense.

What is a snap election?

A snap election, according to Wikipedia, is an election called earlier than expected. Generally it refers to an election in a parliamentary system called when not required (either by law or convention), usually to capitalise on a unique electoral opportunity or to decide a pressing issue. It differs from a recall election in that it is initiated by politicians (usually the head of government or ruling party) rather than voters, and from a special election in that the winners will serve an entire term as opposed to the remainder of an already established term.

Since the power to call snap elections usually lies with the incumbent, they frequently result in increased majorities for the party already in power having been called at an advantageous time; however, there have been cases of snap elections backfiring and resulting in an opposition party's winning or gaining power.

    You disagree so:
Do not excercise your right to vote.
Do not send your children to school.
Do not invest in your country
Do not support the establishment of local business.

Sounds like a plan, knowing that the Martians have landed and taken over the Govt_according to the latest from Maduro.

Mr. Frett you are educated enough to know the difference between a snap election and an early election. For the sake of those you seek to mislead a snap election is one that comes unexpectedly. Various candidates for this election participated in speculating when the elections would be. Some said it would be early, some said late 2015 - early 2016. All however recognized that the territory was in an election season- in fact anxiously awaiting a poling date. Can't you recall one party announcing for some time now that they were ready. Besides, opponents of the incumbent party wanted to see them out as soon as possible. What better could they ask for? Just can please people, can you.

@really? In your own words you defined a snap election as one that is unexpected. .. who besides NDP knew it would be in a month time? Did you know? I didn't. Some of us speculated that it would be called early and of course to the benefit of the ruling NDP BUT not of us expected an election ina month... mayne July but not June. So many young people have not been able to register to vote... I further speculate that you either an NDP candidate or on their payroll...sorry
bandwagon. ..chups! sorry man... that slipped out..you know what I trying to say... yeah you must be affiliated because YOU MISSED the POINT! The PEOPLE are NOT ready! In all what you said... you mentioned "people" ONCE... not THE PEOPLE. ..just "some people". His point was simple... we need to hear more of the views, platforms and manifestos of everyone. This isn't something you can take back to a store and return/exchange if you don't like it. I am with Mr. Frett..boycott the snap election. We need to start a petition. ..see if they listen to us.

      Blessings

Am I to assume you are a VIP supporter? You posted your views and Really posted his..good now we establish who is NDP and VIP. For times the VIP been saying elections would be in July so they knew a quick election was coming. They should have been ready from a year ago. Thy said they were ready so what's the problem now?

That's why it needs a fixed date for elections. However, the people don't need to boycott the elections and they are not signing any death warrant either as they can make a difference by voting out or keeping out the party that seems to make things detrimental for them and the only why this can be done is through your vote and to go out early and exercise your rights. Remember your vote is your voice. It is up to you to take the bribes and vote for or against such.Search you hearts, minds, bodies and souls.

There are 2 and a half political parties. We have less than 30 days to listen to over 30 candidates to make a wise decision that affects the fate of the entire territory. I must agree that we the voters were not given a fair chance to help ourselves and the territory.

while I agree in theory with taking advantage of calling early elections, please do NOT boycott. Using the same argument, there isn't enough time to coordinate and educate the public about what a boycott would entail. You are encouraging people NOT to vote which will backfire because the supporters of government in power will come out anyway. Take this time and the energy to fight. Have a meet the candidates night in every district. State what the VIP is planning to do. PRESENT IDEAS NOT POINTING THE FINGER AND BAD-MOUTHING THE COMPETITION UNLESS IT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE POINT YOU WANT TO MAKE MOVING FORWARD. In general, VIP doesn't know how to campaign to hold people's interest. They sound small against the big machine. THAT is where energy and the last big push should be. Getting out and meet the people. the Incumbent always has the advantage. Get volunteers to door-knock and pass out flyers etc.

Calling for Boycott is accepting defeat--If you are in the Boxing ring you have to fight--An opposition Political Party must always be prepared especially when they are accusing the government of so much wrong---Their failure to prepare--is on them--They wasted too much time vetting people and still make the wrong choices--If Oneal was the leader they would be prepared...their leadership is weak--don`t blame NDP for trying to burst their chain from its weak link---That happens in every thing where competition is concern.. Attacking the opposition weakness, in this case its the leadership.----Sorry-- but that`s how competition works

I am so disappointed with the high level of ignorance being articulated by this talk show host. He is actually contracting himself so I can only conclude that he is totally confused. If the people were to boycott the election as he is telling them to do, then why is he running? And, if the people stay home, then who will vote for him? People will judge us by our actions; so we must be careful of the things we say and do.

Voters please don't boycott the election. Please go to the polls early on June 8 and let us vote them out as early as possible. I know the VIP after they win will uncover a whole heap of financial mess and unaccounted for monies, but the sooner the better. The NDP is a government for those who have and the middle and lower class perish under their regime. They keep talking about what they have done to developed the country but have they done to develop the people? Nothing if you asked me. After almost four years they stop paying government workers their increments but choose to pay this year when it's election. They start putting curve and channels on every road now, but why couldn't this be done two years ago? They just passed the firearms amendment Act this year why couldn't it be done in three years ago? The people of the BVI need to wise up and refuse to let NDP govt put any blindfold over our eyes. It's time we let them know that dirty politics can only last so long and no more. Vote VIP all the way!!!!!

Mr. Frett the way I see it, is that they doing you a favor, because ain't nobody going to vote for you anyways. So save your money to pay for the talk show. I for one going to vote, because there is nothing the NDP can do or say at this point that's going to change how I am going to vote. i believe most of the voters have already decided who they are not going to vote for. It just for the new cadidates and remaining to work their magic.

So, lets see if I understand you correctly Mr. Frett....You say you want THE PEOPLE of the BVI to boycott the election. That being said, one must acknowledge that the ONLY PEOPLE that might boycott would be people who do not support the current administration. So, you want ME to sit at home & NOT exercise MY RIGHT to elect the government of my country. There is no "quorum" involved in an election of government, so only NDP supporters vote, they check NDP all the way. We then have a government with no Opposition, no "checks & balances", & I am to be satisfied that I HAVE PARTICIPATED IN PUTTING A ONE PARTY GOVERNMENT IN POWER, legally obtained by election, by MY NON-PARTICIPATION in the electorial process...I got a better idea - why don't we petition the Queen to dissolve our right to self government, let her decide who rules as WE, THE PEOPLE are, according to you, incapable of selecting our own leadership with only 30 days notice... Mr Frett, you go ahead & boycott - I have been awake for the past 4 (3.5) years, I have an opinion on the direction I want my country to go, & a right to participate in selecting the candidates I feel will best represent my district, my country at large, & my future. Lawyer up, find the grounds to declare the election date illegal & have the judicial "branch" declare a "more acceptable" date, don't spout nonsense that a boycott is an effective means to participate in my democratic right to select my representation...By the way, I won't be selecting you as one of my at large representatives...
