‘Blame the Hon Julian Fraser STS B’ball League!’ – Walwyn

-Minister shifts blame for cancellation of the Virgin Gorda B’ball League Tourney from the unfinished facility to the just concluded Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League
Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn has again stoked controversy, saying that the reason for the cancellation of the Virgin Gorda Basketball League’s annual ‘Summer Jam’ tournament was not the non-completion of the basketball facility being built, but the recently concluded Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed (STS) National Basketball League. In response to a member of the public who called into the show inquiring as to why the tournament was cancelled, the Minister said, “I think the reason from what I understand, I think the [Hon] Julian Fraser Save the Seed tournament that was taking place, I think the referees and some of the players who would have normally been in the Summer Jam were part of that particular league and that posed a problem for the formation of the [VG] League.” Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V.

The Minister who holds the responsibility for sports was speaking on National Democratic Party Radio on Monday night November 17, 2014.

The programme was broadcast on ZBVI 780 AM between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

In response to a member of the public who called into the show inquiring as to why the tournament was cancelled, the Minister said, “I think the reason from what I understand, I think the [Hon] Julian Fraser Save the Seed tournament that was taking place, I think the referees and some of the players who would have normally been in the Summer Jam were part of that particular league and that posed a problem for the formation of the [VG] League.”

“That’s what I understood from the Ministry because we did in fact called to find out what the problem was,” he said.

“I heard the talk that it was because of the new facility but that is not true. Everybody who knows the Virgin Gorda community or the project would know that the existing facility is still there. We didn’t interfere with the facility at all,” said Hon Walwyn.

“We are building a new gym on land that is adjacent to the existing facility,” said the Minister.

Speaking to this news site some days ago, Trevor ‘West’ Stevens, one of the organizers from the Virgin Gorda Basketball League Committee could not say when the League will begin as they are awaiting the completion of the facility. He said the League should have commenced in August 2014.

“We are waiting on the roof and the building to be completed. We haven’t had an update from the people for a while,” he said, referring the persons responsible for the construction of the facilities.

Project Manager for the construction of the facility Steve Augustine had told this news site that while they were aiming for the end of the year, there is no telling when the facility will complete due to delays caused by the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with regards to the shipping of materials.

Observers continue to complain that the facility being built does not look suited for a basketball court and that it appears to be too low.

ok would someone point out to me what is wrong with what he said??? if the old facility is there then them guys could have held the league still right, the new stadium had nothing to do with it. so exactly what is the problem??? if you ask me it seems them guys dont wanna be playing on no old court when they coupld play in AC gym....just my two cents

sounds cheaper to fix the old gym than to build a completely new big facility unless it houses other things. How many basketball players are there anyway?

Myron needs to stop. One thing doesn't have to do with the next. The Chinese gym was not the right size. Another set of NDP corruption.

The present Government aint doing nothing for youths or any infrasuctural needs. Basketball league canceal because of what! Myron PLEASE. We been playing on this court for years with the same dips and bumps. SAVE THE SEED. ASK anyone which is the BEST League in the BVI. VG Summer Jam. So i ask why you left out hundreds of youths to do what on the streets. SAD SAD. The district rep. also held titles like Cheif Minister and Premier and still its not better for VG. The reaction grounds where major sports happen espically track and feild where the conditions are sloping like they have heard, witnessed and still nothing is done to upgrade the grounds. Soccer is the thing now so going up or down a slope is no concern. Please Help we have 4th world conditions next door. No place to even play baseball. I must say we just got a children's play ground after 4 elections. SAD SAD. And the moneys sent could of also patch the holes in the same court. The youths was very much looking forward for the league there is nothing more exciting than Summer Jam, maybe Winter Jam. Finally if you Myron is the head of the ministry why are you saying had called the Ministry that you head for answers that you're fully aware of. It was only a concern when you was campaigning. SAD SAD

Where is the fisherman's dock that had ground breaking, where was the same gym that had ground breaking, where is the pool that had ground breaking, where is the medical complex and the project with the big fence in North Sound that had ground breaking? The NDP is not about talk they go in and get the job done for the people.
