Bishop Cline slams NDP Govt on non-transparency & avoidance of questions
He was speaking with host of the show Paul 'Gadietz' Peart on April 7, 2016 on a number of issues affecting the territory, including that of the attack on the territory's financial services sector by outside forces, most notably journalist organisations concerned with transparency and the UK Government and Opposition.
Cline, also a leading businessman, noted that domestic squabbles including transparency issues surrounding the cruise pier development project and seeming infighting within the NDP Administration have played a part in the predicament in which the country now finds itself
He believes there are some things the Government could have done differently in terms of keeping focus and keeping the people aware, especially after scoring such a landslide victory at the polls in which they came away with 11 of the 13 seats.
NDP has become distracted
“I don't think that they have used this to their advantage in terms of building the confidence of the people and keeping the main things the main things. I think that they have become distracted with a lot of domestic nonsense and instead of acting prudently, there are just some questions there and I believe hopefully this is a wake up call and they would pull themselves together and do the country's business both locally and internationally,” said Bishop Cline.
He said the NDP has not done well with the mandate they have been given by the people.
'Can NDP be trusted?' asks Bishop Cline
Bishop Cline said the NDP Government's continued silence on many issues will only serve to undermine the people's confidence and trust in them.
“People want a Government they can trust, a Government that they can communicate with them honestly and you are not hearing anything...all you are seeing is a lot of avoidance of questions and then you hear of the infighting and the political grumbling and you don't know what to do or say any more,” he said of the NDP Government.
He called the Government's $300 million budget a financial burden and said it is unknown where the money is going to come from to service both the budget and the territory's debt.
Cline has been seen as a controversial figure because of his strong views on the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival being something contrary to faith and because of a book he published on monogamy which created quite a lot of interest among persons in the territory. He recently criticised the Government for what he called their foreign bias in public works contracts and for other services but insisted that he is not against foreign investment.
