BFEC parent complaint on principal can be personal – says PTA President
An excerpt from the email from the parent reads: “In every school principals and teachers are being rotated but we have been stuck with one at our high school who is not working in the best interest of our kids.”
The Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC) is the only secondary institution in Virgin Gorda, where Ms. Caryl O’Neal is Principal.
The Virgin Gorda Parent claims that, “the kids attending the Educational Centre are being suspended for things that don't make any sense.” The anonymous parent added that “they are giving failing grades automatically on test because they feel that's what the child punishment deserve.”
The email continued by saying “they are doing as they please and no one is holding them accountable, we need a new principal, our secondary students are in need of a better leader!”
However, Ms. Bascombe said to her knowledge, there has never been any complaint in relation to the existing principal and her ability to perform her duties.
She stated that she is unaware of complaints of that nature and that the particular complaint sounds like a personal problem between the parent and the principal.
The PTA President said that the process the concerned parent should have taken is to send her letter of concerns to the Ministry of Education so that the situation could be properly addressed.“Putting it online is not going to solve any problems.”
Ms. Bascombe said the parents of BFEC elected her to be PTA President to represent the students and parents in school matters and she is the kind of person that if she "cannot build up then she won’t tear down".
She added that she will not support any of the comments made by the anonymous parent.
Principal Ms. O’Neal, when contacted on the matter said according to the code of conduct she is prohibited to comment but added that if a parent has an issue and chose to resort to the media in hopes that the media can solve whatever the situation, then she guessed the anonymous parent thought that the media can solve their problem.
Attempts were made to contact the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn and his Acting Permanent Secretary Dr. Marcia Potter, but both were unavailable.
