BEYC staff nervous about pending job cuts
They were informed of an imminent cut in the workforce which is likely to come into effect about two weeks from now.
“We had a meeting and they told us that they will be cutting the staff population. They explained the situation to us, we understand but we are still worried because they didn’t say who was going and who was staying,” a junior staff member of the BEYC told this news site.
Contacted today May 19, 2014, Executive Managing Director of Bitter End Yacht Club Mr Gordon A. Overing assured that the numbers would be at minimum. He said that they are focusing on persons at retirement status.
“Actually some persons who are ready for retirement have already approached us,” said Mr Overing. He said the number of persons they are forced to let go is not likely to exceed 12.
In a statement to this news site Mr Overing stated that it is after 40 years of continuous operation under the ownership of the Hokin family, Bitter End is adapting to the new travel industry trends. The focus will be on a smaller, more upscale product with an emphasis on quality and service, he said.
With this reality, ownership has decided to take 26 rooms out of the inventory. The rooms are located at the south end of the property (The former Tradewinds Hotel).
The smaller inventory will require fewer staff to operate and therefore a downsizing in staff requirements is necessary. All efforts will be made to assist employees affected by the downsizing in order to limit the impact.
In his discourse with this news site Mr Overing said that they have already sought and gotten the some guidance from the Commissioner of Labour to ensure that they approach the process in the right manner.
He noted that they had indeed met with all staff last Thursday May 15, 2014 and will be meeting with various department heads to determine who is desirous of going off on retirement before finalizing the list of persons that will be leaving soon.
