Better to give than to receive - BVIHSA

ROAD TOWN, Totola, VI – The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) celebrated Christmas 2013 under the theme, It is Better to Give than to Receive.

The Annual Peebles Hospital Christmas Tree Programme was held on, Wednesday, 25th December, 2013. The Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith, OBE, stated, he was pleased to be part of the Peebles Hospital’s longstanding Christmas Programme, as the programme is very important to patients as it brings good cheer to the sick and helps in brighten their day.

The Hon. Premier also acknowledged the health initiatives taking place within the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority and encouraged everyone to work harder to prevent non-communicable diseases. He advised that some ways to aid in preventing non-communicable diseases can mean exercising and eating right.

Also attending the Christmas programme were, His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Boyd McCleary, CMG, CVO, Leader of the Opposition and 9th District Representative, Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, BVIHSA Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Darlene Carty-Baptiste, executive members and staff of the BVIHSA and members of the public.

The Annual Peebles Hospital Christmas Tree programme is held on Christmas Day to bring Christmas cheer to all the patients in the hospital through seasonal greetings, prayers, songs, and the delivering of gifts.

In addition to the Christmas programme, the Obstetrics Ward at Peebles Hospital was delighted to announce the birth of the 2013 Christmas Baby. A baby boy named Elon Phillip Corea, who was born at 7:32 am and weighed 7lbs 6oz. The Nursing Director, Mrs. Jacinth Hannibal, stated that “Every birth at Peebles Hospital is very special to us and we are even more so elated when we have a Christmas Delivery.”

The BVIHSA abstaining from hosting a formal Christmas party, however throughout the Authority, many Units hosted events in honor of the spirit of giving, to patients, the community and to each other.

On Monday, 23rd December, 2013, the Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Darlene Carty-Baptiste, signed 475 gift tags that were attached to a small bag of sweet treats that were delivered on Christmas Eve to all BVIHSA employees. Mrs. Carty-Baptiste stated that, “We like many throughout the world are experiencing financial challenges, however, I just wanted to tell each and every staff member thank you, you are appreciate, and you are valued at BVIHSA. I see on a daily basis the staffs’ commitment to service excellence and improvement, and their efforts do not go unnoticed.”

On Friday, 20th December, 2013, the Social Services Unit held the first Annual Angel Tree Christmas Celebration, which was sponsored by BVIHSA employees, local churches, business owners, and individuals throughout the community. A total of 56 children were sponsored by BVIHSA employees who received gifts from their wish list. Additionally, 12 families from within the Virgin Islands community received a full Christmas dinner that included a turkey, a ham, side dishes with all the holiday trimmings, dessert and a case of juice.

Speaking at the celebration, the Social Services Unit Manager, Mrs. Marion Turnbull stated, “I was overjoyed by the reception from the families and by the support given from all the sponsors. In these hard times, people are forced to do more with less and the true meaning of Christmas has always been the free gift of Christ, so to share his message of giving, I am pleased to be part of this celebration where Virgin Islands families and children can have a blessed Holiday Season.” She also stated that the Social Services Unit is hoping to double the amount of children and families sponsored next year.

Finally, various events and customer appreciation initiatives were held at the BVIHSA clinics throughout the Territory and at Peebles Hospital for the month of December. The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority envisions being the leader and preferred provider of healthcare in the Virgin Islands by delivering excellent, compassionate, client-centred healthcare.
