ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Local tabloid the BVI Beacon has been caught with its pants down regarding some alleged unethical journalism practices the newspaper is now employing to keep itself afloat.

As print journalism and the newspaper business continues to perish globally, the Virgin Islands (VI) based tabloid published by local businessman Russell Harrigan and edited by Caucasian expat, Freeman Rogers is showing its true colours by targeting and profiling the East Asian Chairman and CEO of the ICA Group, Mr Ali Nawaz Shaikh.

This comes following a bombshell report by Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) regarding former Premier, Dr. D. Orlando Smith of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the role he played in allegedly killing both the Prospect Reef and Dolphin Discovery Project that prevented over forty Virgin Islanders from getting jobs at the resort in December of 2018.

ICA Group, one of the Principal Investors in the project, had shared shocking details of incompetence, bureaucracy and a lacklustre approach from the NDP towards the investor’s proposals to redevelop Prospect Reef.

Now a 3rd generation international company, the ICA Group has had a long history of Public/Private partnerships in areas such a tourism and project development, international collaborations, Oil and Gas, Investment Banking in addition to Financial Services in countries across the Middle East, the Caribbean basin, North America and China.

Highly Unethical

In a June 19, 2019 document seen by this news website from tax consultants, Tax on the Fax Consulting LLC, the company has moved to formally chide one of the expat reporters attached to the BVI Beacon, Ms Genevieve Glatsky for attempting to obtain the tax information of the ICA group CEO over the telephone.

"This is very unique that someone calls on the phone and asking various questions on clients Tax matters, this approach is unethical and probably illegal, such matters are asked in writing," the company's Owner and Tax Consultant, Chip Reeves said to Ms Glatsky in a striking rebuke.

Information reaching VINO, also suggests that the Caucasian BVI Beacon reporter Ms Glatsky has been allegedly utilising the same approach to harass officials at Guardian Group, Dolphin Discovery and even the Ex-Wife of Mr Shaikh.

Gutter Journalism

While the details coming into our newsroom show how low the BVI Beacon is willing to stoop with these alleged unethical practices to stay relevant as pointed out by Tax on the Fax Consulting LLC, it comes as no surprise.

Several past and current VINO staff have complained of overbearing harassment from the tabloid’s editor, Mr Rogers, grilling them to leak information on the internal affairs of VINO and its owner, Hon Julian Willock of parent company Advance Marketing and Professional Services (AMPS).

"I'm not even in the BVI and this overbearing Editor from the BVI Beacon called my office requesting confidential information about Mr Willock, his staff and how VINO operates, it is beyond shocking how those people operate," one former staff told VINO in March of 2019.

Both Rogers and Glatsky at the time were trying to implicate House Speaker, Hon Willock in the editorial affairs of VINO, when the Speaker—elected unanimously by the VI House of Assembly (HoA) on March 12, 2019— repeatedly said that while he remains in the business end of the parent company, he has divorced himself from the editorial aspects of VINO for several years.

VINO has every right to call out what they see as inappropriate behavior. I would however like to suggest that they take the high road and stop placing the word "Caucasian" before the names of people they're writing about. This is a small community and we already know if people are black, white, or in-between. Let's not put the focus on race whenever we have a disagreement with someone whose skin looks different from ours - just call out the behaviour.

VINO I love your reporting always fair and tells it like it is. I see the word "Caucasian" used all the time in the USA, CNN, NYT, Washington Post and the likes

Thanks for fighting against racism VINO you deserved to be honored

While perhaps the journalist in question may have been using distasteful methods in seeking information, why does the article have to be spun with racist tones? Is there any evidence that use of these alleged methods (seeking tax info) is racist?

The writers are vino are clever. VINO knows by using the word 'Caucasian' it makes this article even more controversial without even suggesting racism. It why VINO is and will remain #1. Us VI need to stop being pawns in these games and clearly the Beacon is not as high standards as they claim to be.

What would I find at www.cheapticket.com? Shouldn't it be WWW.CHEAPTICKETS.COM? I did not find the website listed as it did not have the "s" at the end of the word ticket.

Funny how people get all bent out of shape when somebody asks questions you don't want to answer.
how do you think we all found out about the airplane deal, and the port shenanigans?
a reporter asked the tough questions! That's how! This reporter just doing her job. She broke no laws asking a question.

Say what you want concerning The Beacon, they being around since Big Ben was a watch. VINO only around since 2010 according to their front page. I wonder if the VINO journalist ever took the time to look st the client base of The Beacon. They obviously don't rely on a good story to sell their written paper. As long as the financial services are alive so will The Beacon be.

VINO..though I am an Avid follower, I don’t agree with u adding the word “Caucasian” before her name .. personally I felt this was given emphasis to create racial tension against her.. we all know she’s Caucasian from previous articles.. don’t incite racial wars..VINO you are #1 keep your journalism “clean”...

I don’t think Ms. Glatsky is a racist. I think she is practicing investigative journalism which could be very intrusive and may appear aggressive at times but without asking the tough questions the public would remain in the dark on very important issues that could affect us all. The press is a key player which helps to ensure government accountability and transparency.

Translation: a reporter does a thorough job and asks questions investigating potentially corrupt business practices. Ruffles feathers among politically connected insiders who then attack reporter viciously.
