Beacon reporter vents disapproval of COVID-19 ‘beach closure’

- Claire Shefchik makes her disagreement known across social media platforms
One journalist at the BVI Beacon, has called out the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) for allegedly discriminating against her with the closure of local beaches, even as the measure is meant to protect locals from the COVID-19 pandemic. Photo: Facebook

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – While even reporters are expected to comply with COVID-19 measures for the safety of the Territory, one reporter at the BVI Beacon has voiced her disapproval with the decision of the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) to keep beaches closed.

In a tweet on April 28, 2020, Claire Shefchik posted, “#BVI government says I can't go to the beach,” with an accompanying image that read, “this is the worst kind of discrimination-- the kind against me.”

Beaches remain closed – Premier Fahie

As part of the measures to mitigate community spread of the Novel Coronavirus, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) had announced that no visits to beaches were permitted during the month-long 24-hour lockdown; however, with the easing of restrictions from Monday, April 27, 2020, the measure remained in place.

"Stay away from beaches. Beaches are closed until further notice," Hon Fahie said in his ‘The New Regular’ COVID-19 manifesto statement on Monday, April 27, 2020, while also calling on residents to wear masks when conducting business in the public.

The Premier also urged businesses not to serve unmasked customers and at the same time noted that a curfew will remain in place from 1:00 pm and end at 6:00 am the following day for the next 14 days.

‘Open the beaches’ - Shefchik

The tweet is also not the first time Ms Shefchik had voiced her disapproval of the move to close beaches as she also did so on Facebook a day earlier.

In the popular ‘The Real BVI Community Board” Facebook group, one resident who spotted two individuals allegedly defying the beach closure restriction, posted the photo that has since amassed hundreds of comments and shares.

"Long Bay West End, 11:04 this morning [April 27, 2020], taken from my porch. We're never going to get through this as a community if we can't put aside our individual senses of privilege and entitlement for a few months," the caption with the accompanying photo read.

Ms Shefchik was the first to comment, “The beaches should be open,” in an earlier show of disapproval towards the move by Government to keep beaches closed as a measure to protect against community spread of COVID-19.

The Virgin Islands currently has two active cases of COVID-19.

I agree that the beach isn't going nowhere. But there's many who commented and was being very disrespectful to the person who posted the pic of the 2 individuals walking on the beach. Some telling her to mind her business and don't get me started with the other rude and out of place ones who feel they sound good with their foolish comments.....you can tell a lot about some of them just by their comments

Tracey Galloway Claire Shefchik that’s great, American. When you go home to America you go on the beach all you want but in the BVI you need to just do as you’re told and stop agitating.

Claire Shefchik Ok. America: democracy. BVI: dictatorship. Got it.

Yes, the beaches will be around forever. I know if the Premier allowed people to go to the beaches, we will see another Florida beach opening up because people don't listen at all. For the few who will try to keep their distance, the ones who don't follow the rules will endanger everyone in one day, then we will have a full blown problem we cannot stop on our small islands. To the Premier, stay strong and don't allow uncaring people change your mind because if you do open the beaches and we have an outbreak like never before, then they will want to hang you and call you the worse names you could imagine.

Why not open the beaches on Anegada? Maybe Virgin Gorda? Keep them closed on Tortola, where crowds are more likely, but open them where the population is less dense.
    • nope (29/04/2020, 13:46) Like (17) Dislike (3) Reply
Then everyone from Tortola is going to be coming over to Anegada to go to the beach. We don’t need the extra crowds right now.

The police say it’s because they don’t have enough persons to patrol the beaches to make sure that social distancing is kept.. Here's an idea.. re-activate the former Beach Wardens and draft them as temporary officers and let them keep order on the beaches... that would solve the problem, give some extra jobs out...and open the beaches up

You all are sick! I see reporters on CNN swear and say what they want about the President or any government official who they are not pleased with. You all ever watch Chris Cumo @9 or the other black guy that comes on after him @10? Those guys do not PLAY! they tell it like it is and CNN never fires them! A reporter is supposed to be able to ask the 'hard' questions and speak for those who do not have a voice.

All the time we are hearing, no beach, no beach. What is the reason for that? You can't go to the beach, yet hundreds can stand in supermarket lines for hours upon hours cursing and carrying on while saliva is going all over the place. In this corona pandemic, it is highly unlikely that persons would be so irresponsible to have parties, etc. People just want to be able to soak themselves from the aches and pains that existed before and those that they acquired during the lockdown.

As one person said, the sea is a healer! There is a reason why they are trying to keep us from that God made healing beach.

It would be sad to see that this reporter is fired.

That meme has been going round for months if not years and it is a totally self-deprecating, ironic meme. The whole point of it is that, yes discrimination exists, however when there is clearly no discrimination, because EVERYONE is experiencing the same restrictions, the meme is nothing but ironic.

When the Government announced some weeks ago during the easement of the lockdown, that some public places including beaches will remain close, it prompted a barrage of blogs in many Media Houses some for and others against this measure which the Government solidly adopted, in its fight against CODVID 19 in the Territory. Some of these blogs appeared on this news site by persons openly criticized this decision. My question though, why was this reporter singled out and her picture posted based on a tweet she posted? Is there something sinister going on other than just this tweet? Could the answer be found in her own words " This is the worst kind of discrimination...the kind against me? Is the word " Discrimination" the fuel to her tweet making news? Closing the beach is like preventing us from enjoying the sun, the rain ,the moon, the wind and nature on the whole which is our God given right. People let us wise up ourselft an do some research an see that our ancestors did use the sea and herbs to heal all manner of sicknesses, diseases and viruses. Closing the beach God will shake us for that, the writing is on the wall . be warned

“u all ever watch Chris Cumo @9 or the other black guy that comes on after him @10?“ Peaches are you saying that Chris Cuomo, who is of Italian descent and brother of Andrew Cuomo, NY governor and son Mario Cuomo, former NY Governor, is Black? Or that you want to call Don Lemon, a Black American with a name, by another name that we won’t repeat here. Things never change with folks and their wannabes. As the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans. In the midst of a pandemic and to protect lives, government placed a temporary restriction on beach usage. What discrimination is Claire Shefchik talking about, for the restriction applies to everyone? Discrimination is when Bull Conner down in Alabama turned loose dogs on Black protestors or turning fire hoses on Black protestors or Emmit Till being killed for whistling at a White woman in Money, Ms, or Blacks not getting jobs, getting into college.....etc because of the color of their skin or doctors injecting Blacks with syphilis to gauge response........etc. Ms. Shefchik has a choice when the border opens, ie, catch the first thing sailing or flying. In the mean time, she needs to follow government effort to mitigate the virus.

Discrimination is not just black and white. It is the unjust and prejudicial treatment of different categories of people based on race, sex, and national origin amongst other things. Persons are allowed to discriminate against persons they refer to as "Island man/woman" daily on this news without anyone speaking out against it. It is a norm so why the news?
