DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – The high flying Bayside Blazers have gone into most of its games in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League as the underdogs, but when the games end they always come out the top dogs.

This was the same last night October 31, 2014 at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in the best of three games for Championship finals between the Bayside Blazers and the Knights.

While the Knights seemed to have had their game plan on it was still no match for the Bayside Blazers which have the most wins in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League in regular season.

Bayside Blazers took the first game in an 88-76 decisive defeat over the Knights in round 1 of Championship games. Game two continues tonight November 1, 2014 at 8:30 PM at the Save the Seed Energy Centre.

Deon J. Edwin and Asim Z. C. Beazer were again the driving force behind the Bayside Blazers continued post season success, but it was the overall strength off the bench that proved decisive as the Knights threatened to cause an upset to match the magnitude of their supporters amongst a large crowd.

After a delayed start due to the late conclusion of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) Inter Squad Exhibition Game, which finished 63-63, the Knights raced into an early 4-0 lead through Nichols Charles and Jevon K. Serrant, before Shakeem E. Freeman went in from down town and Edwin and Beazer combined to put the Bayside Blazers ahead.

Beazer splashed to make it 12-10, but Houston Penn then leveled the game at 12-12 on a fast break and Romano Peters put the Knights up 12-14. However Edwin and Beazer combined again and as Beazer cut inside to score, he drew a foul from Penn and netted the “and one” to make it 15-14 Bayside Blazers. Beazer splashed another “3” and Louie A. Poblete gave Lyle W. Duggins an easy score to make it 20-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The six point advantage of Bayside Blazers was steadily eroded during the second quarter as after an Edwin score to make it 22-14, Charles linked up with Serrant to make it 22-16, Charles scored to make it 22-18. However Edwin then went on a five point solo run to open up the lead to 27-18, before Penn helped Serrant’s attempted shot into the basket as it rolled around the rim, Peters twisted and turned to make it a 7 point game with 4:32 left until half time, Deangelo Sampson and Charles both scored to make it a 5 point game and with 2:11 left, Serrant made it 36-33.

The frantic last few seconds of the half saw Poblete score on a break, Charles' score, a big block by Penn on Chaurbin V. Smith and Charles edging the Knights into the lead at 38-39.

Freeman put the Blazers back ahead inside the first 30 seconds of the third quarter, Serrant leveled it up inside the first 60 seconds, Peters scored to make it 41-43 to the Knights, Charles popped in a finger roll and splashed a “3” to make it 41-48 and the game had seen a 17 point swing from the Blazers to the Knights.

Freeman splashed in from long range to reduce the arrears and also scored again on a pass from Beazer and then Edwin intercepted, drove the length of the court, scored, drew a foul and added an extra point to make the score 48-48 with 5:38 left.

Edwin put the Blazers up 52-48, Charles pulled two points back, Duggins scored and Freeman went 1 for 2 from the Charity Stripe after Sampson missed an easy basket. Duggins made it 57-50 to the Blazers and Poblete rounded out another amazing scoring swing with a “3” to make it 60-50 with 2:26 remaining on the clock.

Poblete and Serrant exchanged baskets, Penn urged his team mates on, but another Freeman “3” concluded the quarter at 67-54, Bayside Blazers.

Struggling under the depth of the Bayside Blazers bench and beginning to fall apart mentally, the Knights could get no closer than a six point game during the 4th quarter and after Beazer hung up a lofted pass for Edwin to slam home to make it 79-67 with 3:38 left the game was affectively done as a contest.

Top Scorers for the Bayside Blazers were Edwin with 30 points, 5 rebounds; Beazer with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and Freeman with 12 points and 4 rebounds.

For the Knights, Charles scored 26 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, Serrant 19 points 4 rebounds, 4 assists, Peters 13 points, 7 rebounds and Penn 12 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks.
