DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - For the third year, Basketball Team ‘Bayside Blazers’ has partnered with the BVI Cancer Society in observing Breast Cancer Month.

The team in a show of support for survivors and its fight, has worn ‘pink socks’ in ongoing games currently been played in Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League.

President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria A. Fahie has since commended the team saying “kudos to the Bayside Blazers for helping to bring breast cancer awareness to the community.” 

The long time President of the society—a survivor herself—noted that “early detection saves lives.”

Manager of the Bayside Blazers, Mr Julian Willock, in an invited comment said, “our team is more than just bouncing a ball, we try and bring light to other issues while keeping the focus on the game of basketball and playing to win.”

Willock Committed to Awareness

Mr Willock said he was proud of the players and coaches for getting involved by wearing the pink socks, “as cancer continues to rob us of our family and friends.”  

He said this is something “we will do each year” and thanked many in corporate community and individuals who continue to make contributions to the team, hence promoting the sport of basketball.

Asked if he thinks his team will be the 2018 Champions in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed League, he said, “it’s too early to start measuring for gold rings… we will get out there, play hard, play smart and put the work in to win.”

The Bayside Blazers was founded in 2014 and has a team for regional competitions and a different team for local basketball tournaments.

2018 Team

The 2018 team and personnel consists of Owner/Manager: Mr Julian Willock, Head Coach: Rhennie O. Phipps, Assistant Coach: Jason A. Edwin, Alternate Coach: Kennedy H. Bass, Scorer/Statistician: Gavin J. Foster, Team Doctor: Dr Ikechukwu Emeland and Team Attorney Stephen R. Daniels. 

The 2018 Bayside Blazers players participating in the League are Eustance C. Freeman (Team Captain), Anthony J. Keane (Overseas player), Travis A. Isaac (draft pick), Douron R. Phillip, Stephon S. Caul, Dion M. Blyden,  Tavon J. Phillip, Enrico J. Harrigan, Devante A. Brewley, Mikey S. Joseph, Nixon M. Hamilton, and Kimani T. Stevens.

Meanwhile, games continue in the second round playoffs at the Save the Seed Energy Centre today, October 6, 2018.

At 6:30 PM the ‘Junior Bayside Blazers’ will take on ‘Beast Mode’ in the best out of three in playoffs. 

In the senior Division, the second round for the Western and Eastern Division Titles continue when at 8: 00 PM, ‘Bayside Blazers’ will come up against ‘Momentum.’

It will either be a clean sweep to advance to championship or ‘Momentum’ will even it up, sending it to a third game.

The final of the night’s games at 9:30 PM will see defending Champions ‘Splash Brothers’ come up against ‘Pure Playaz.’

Here too, it could be a clean sweep or ‘Splash Brothers’ could send it into a third game.

2 days off

According to Chairwomen of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League Ms Kharid T. Fraser, the league will take a 2-days break on Sunday October 7, 2018 and Friday October 12, 2018 where there will be no games played, as the New Life Baptist Church will host their annual Power Plus events.
