DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - While it was a 1 point win for both teams Bayside Blazers against Run it Red with 84 to 83 and Avengers against Talk Done 69 to 68 on Saturday October 4, 2014, both Bayside Blazers and Avengers have wrapped up their eight games in the regular season of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League and have earned a spot in the playoffs in the Western Division.

The high flying Bayside Blazers’ 1 point win knocks Run it Red out of a playoff spot in the Western Division of the League.

While it was a dogfight between both teams to the end with Run it Red playing for the first time with their big draft pick Dwayne ‘Kobo’ Penn, a game that saw excitement, tension and had the crowd filled with intensity, in the end Bayside Blazers showed how to win when it matters.

Run It Red started at a fantastic pace and raced into an 11-2 lead at the start of the must win game if they wanted to progress into the playoffs. However the Bayside Blazers, in a basketball version of the Tortoise and the Hare, slowly got back into the game through Lyle W. Duggins, Louie A. Poblete and Jolyon J. D. Wilson and were up 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Asim Z. C. Beazer increased that advantage early in the second quarter, but Nigel Carey, Reynaldo Smith and Tavon Phillips spurred their team on to ensure parity at the start of the second half with the scores 32-32.

Sandy E. Nadal began to find his range during the third quarter as the Bayside Blazers kept ahead on the score board, but never by more than four points and as the period came to an end Carey reduced the deficit to just one point with rebounding his own shot to score and hitting one of two Free Throws to make it 52-51.

With Run It Red’s season on the line the fourth quarter was again a topsy turvy affair, played at frantic pace and with the scoreboard constantly changing as the teams slugged it out.

With just under three minutes to go Raheem Blyden scored to put the Red’s up 65-62. Blyden then sunk from down town to put his team back up by four heading into the last minute after Chaurbin V. Smith had gone two for two from the Charity Stripe. Duggins then scored from distance and as the clock showed less than a minute remaining Wilson leveled the game at 70-70. Duggins put the Bayside Blazers up by two, but with 7.2 seconds left the Reds got the ball and after a battle under the basket Carey tipped in to send the game to overtime.

Another pulsating five minutes had the large crowd on the edge of their seats as; once again, the teams traded scores like old time boxers slugging it out. Nadal scored Phillips, almost a spent force somehow found the energy to get from end to end, keeping his team close as the Blazers used every ounce of their team spirit.

Into the last minute the Bayside Blazers led by two and with under 24 seconds Poblete made it a four point game, Phillips then saw a shot agonizingly roll around the rim and away and although Smith scored from down town at the buzzer the Reds knew they had let a big one get away from them at the death.

Top Scorers for the Bayside Blazers: Asim Z. C. Beazer with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, 10 steals, 1 block; Louie A. Poblete 15 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 2 steals; Sandy E. Nadal 16 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 6 steals; Lyle W. Duggins 11 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals.

Top Scorers Run it Red: Tavon Phillips 24 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block; Nigel Carey 19 points, 22 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 steal.

It is important to note that Bayside Blazers is one of the few teams without a Draft pick up in the Hon. Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League. The Team is managed and owned by Julian Willock, Head Coach is Rhennie O. Phipps and Assistant Coach is Jason A. Edwin. The Team Captain is Rhodni A. Skelton.

It is now clear that Bayside Blazers leads the Western Division and the League with the best record of 7 wins and 1 controversial loss to Game Boyz.

While an updated ranking has not been announced by officials of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League, Bayside Blazers holds the number 1 spot in the Western Division and the entire League.

Other teams in the Western Division playoffs are Da 3rd with 6 wins and 2 losses and which have as part of their squad big time draft pick Ray D. Victor, Avengers has 6 wins and 2 losses with draft pick Travis A. Isaac, and the fourth place is still up for grabs.

If Game Boyz loses their next and final game it could still give Run it Red a chance to make the playoffs under the playoffs formula, as Run it Red defeated them in regular season.

In the Eastern Division of the League the teams that have already earned spots in the playoffs are the 2013 Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League Champions Ruff House with 6 wins and 2 losses record and has Draft pick Sean Woods, Talk Done with 5 wins and 3 losses and Knights 5 wins and 2 losses with Draft pick Steve E. Parillon who is yet to play with the team. However, Knights have picked up a big man who played college basketball in his days, Houston Penn. The fourth place in the Eastern Division is still undecided.

don't know what point Blazers trying to make on the draft pick - they turned down selecting anyone when given the option and were denied a behind closed doors "fix it" attempt. deaon Edwin and beazer then joined - not to mention avoiding playing the avengers in regular season- wonder who does do the fixtures ????
