VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA has shown support for the VG Summer Jam basketball league and the youths involved, noting that it is a terrific vehicle for their advancement.

“This is a terrific vehicle that I’ve seen, if used properly, can penetrate the minds of young people,” Hon. Fraser said during the VG Summer Jam All Star games held at the Jeffrey Caines Arena in Virgin Gorda on Saturday, November 9, 2013.

He added, “It teaches you about being a team member, it teaches you to cooperate. It also conditions your mind to stay out of trouble and that’s one of the greatest attributes to these sporting activities.”

According to the Third District Representative, the VG Summer Jam was a stepping stone for youths and he urged them to cherish it as such, “I know some of you have ambitions of going off to college, becoming a part of the college [basketball] fraternity and if you’re lucky you get into the NBA.”

Meanwhile, Regional General Manager of Delta Petroleum (Caribbean) Ltd, Mr Bevis A. Sylvester, speaking of the company’s continued sponsorship of the Summer Jam league said an investment in the community and in the youth is a safeguard for the future.

“The youths are our main concern and we want to channel positive energy towards the youth so that they can in turn find positive energy with which they can identify,” he stated.

Sylvester shrugged off any involvement of politics in the league in the selection of Hon. Fraser over Ninth District Representative Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE or Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn.

“Every year we choose persons to come and present the winning trophies to the teams, last time we chose Hon. Myron Walwyn… more so, [Hon. Fraser] is the person we chose because his district houses our headquarters regionally and it also houses our plant where our terminal is situated,” Sylvester stated about the former Works Minister’s presence.

The Regional General Manager also stated that Hon. Fraser has been very helpful in ensuring that drainage problems among other things within the community were being addressed.

It's very strange how we behave towards the leaders of our territory. If the Government sponsored the event it is fair enough that they were given the opportunity to speak or give some sort of remark. As a youth of the community I think that we should give praise to whom it is due. Not to who wants to be placed on a high stool...
    WAKE UP BVI!!
