ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- While admitting that the BVI Diabetes Association has not requested the statistics on the actual number of persons afflicted by the illness, the high incidence of diabetes in the territory is reason enough to focus this year’s month of activities on educating parents on the benefits of healthy living.

In an hour-long press conference at the association’s office building on Main Street, President of the BVI Diabetes Association, Mr Elton Georges CMG, OBE said he was going as far as saying that the powers that be should consider higher taxes and even a ban on unhealthy drinks and sweets in the territory.

“On the level of policy, that is where the big impacts can be made, ban the sodas and these drinks, and sweets, or put the taxes on them so high…by making them more expensive, by restricting their use,” he pointed out.

He said the same should be done for tobacco which is known to be harmful to health.

Activities

The month of November is World Diabetes Month, being held under the theme: Eyes on diabetes.

Activities such as visits to the senior centres in Brewers Bay, Carrot Bay, Sea Cows Bay and East End, church services at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Road Town and Catholic Community Centre on Virgin Gorda, a walk at the Queen Elizabeth II Park, a visit to schools on Virgin Gorda and Tortola from the 14th to the 18th, a health fair at East End/Long Look Community Centre and Health Screening on World Diabetes day (Monday November 14, 2016) are some of the events marking the month.

No activities will be held on Jost Van Dyke and Anegada; however, in 2017, residents of those islands can expect to be included for the first time.

Diabetes does not discriminate

Meantime, Chair of this month’s activities-Tracia Smith Hodge quoted the International Diabetes Federation which stated that it was estimated that in 2015 over 450 million persons were diagnosed with the illness and that number is expected to increase to 652 million by 2040.

“We have a whole lot of people in the world and we have a whole lot of people silently suffering from diabetes. So here is the importance for the BVI Diabetes Association to raise the awareness in our community. Most of the times you hear about diabetes, you think of the older persons but diabetes does not discriminate when it comes to age, colour, religion, creed; anyone can be diagnosed with diabetes,” she said.

What about over the counter 'legal' drugs, you're going to ban those too and let's go back to bush tea and rub down?

People are not going to buy what they don't want. The Diabetes Association is already doing a wonderful job on awareness. Nobody is putting a weapon to anyone's head for them to buy unhealthy stuff. Like in everything, people have a choice to exercise. Take it and suffer the consequences, or leave it and your health will improve.

You made me smile, While "Nobody is putting a weapon to anyone's head for them to buy unhealthy stuff," there are dire consequences. After they fall ill, they expect the government to provide medical care free of charge or others to foot the bill. Many people have the ridiculous idea that no one can tell them anything; "I am my own man/woman and I can do whatever I please," but the end result is a burden to society.

I am shocked at Mr. Georges to suggest banning sweets and unhealthy drinks. For heaven's sake, don't you think we have more than enough "government" in our lives?

Parents need to watch what they and their children eat. Full stop. Past that, I will fight tooth and nail against my government telling us what we can and can't eat. Strupes!

because it is the tax payers that help with health issues and families who have to take care of the sick, obese and toothless. nothing dictator about it. it is the greater good. even NYC wanted to ban bigger 32 oz soft drinks.

No one is putting a rope around their necks and making them eat the foods that is bad for them. Ban the products and people will go over to ST.Thomas and get the stuff.

It would have been a more constructive suggestion if he proposed that there be subsidies so the prices of fruits and vegetables be decreased. That would encourage more people to eat healthy.

Banning unhealthy foods and sweet is not the panacea for controlling/preventing diabetes(sugar). A strong public education and outreach programme is critical to arresting this devasting disease/illness. The strong public education and outreach programme should include dietary planning, regular exercise......etc.

This administration have a set of dictators: once it is a Legal product the consumer have the right to make a choice: what form of discrimination home boy deal with; what is next, how big we can build our homes; how many children we should have....it was government that introduce mandatory NHI(deal with it now)....I understand the value of good health and the whole nine yards but you should not seek to ban products....educating the pubilic is a good step
  • don't ban, tax (09/11/2016, 15:42) Like (0) Dislike (3) Reply
High tax needed on foods with no nutritional value and keep them away from schools. Kids cannot learn and be motivated to succeed if they are obese befoe they leave primary school. That is child abuse.
This thing affect beaviour and ability to learn as well as physical health. We all also end up paying for this in unecessary health care cost
