ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Bahamas were crowned Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s champions on Friday June 12, 2015 with a stunning 55-51 win over defending champions Jamaica at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. The British Virgin Islands’ ladies grabbed 7th in their first outing.

A fiercely competitive final between the Bahamas and the defending champions had seen Jamaica seemingly in control but unable to completely see off the tenacious Bahamians.

A very close first quarter, 11-10 Jamaica, was followed by Jamaica leading by 7 at half-time and going on to 43-36 up at the end of the third quarter.

The Bahamas began to slowly narrow the gap and got to within two after Ashley Moss netted a free throw to make it 47-45 with just over six minutes left. Then Philicia Kelly scored to tie the game at 45-45, before Sha-Londa Neely made back to back scores to give the Bahamas the lead, which they managed to hold on to in a frenetic last couple of minutes to win 55-51.

BVI beat Guyana for 7th place

The British Virgin Islands, competing in its first-ever international women’s basketball competition, used some hot shooting in the second half to pull away from Guyana for a 72-62 victory, earning seventh place in the eight-team tournament.

Guyana jumped out to a 6-0 start, but BVI slowly pulled even, and then took its first lead at 12-11 with just over 2:00 remaining in the first period.

The two teams would end the first deadlocked at 15.

BVI opened up a six-point lead in the second quarter with 2:31 left at 28-22. Guyana, however, answered with a run of its own and drew to within two at halftime, 30-28. The BVI sharpshooters took over in the third, with Darier Malone, Tyalia Nibbs and Tiffany Jennings drilling a combined four shots from long range and opening up a 53-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

BVI ballooned the lead to 19 at 64-45 on a Shauliqua Fahie three-pointer and fast break layup at the 5:50 mark, and the host nation looked to be running away from Guyana. But Guyana went on a 15-5 run of its own and got the lead to nine with less than a minute to play. However, despite the furious comeback attempt, they would get no closer.

Tamara Philip led BVI with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Darier Malone scored 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Miriam McKenzie put up 22 points and 16 rebounds for Guyana.

Antigua overpower St Vincent

Antigua and Barbuda captured fifth place with a 57-49 victory over St Vincent and the Grenadines. Antigua trailed 18-7 at the end of the first quarter but they were able make a run and tie the game by halftime at 30. The second half got off to a quick start with 5-0 run for Antigua and going into the fourth quarter it looked like they were going to away with the game as they were up 44-37.

However, St Vincent did not go down quietly and got as close as three with 2:30 remaining. Two free throws by Daila Clarke and a layup from Amanda Edwards put the game to rest with less than a minute to play.

Antigua got 17 points from Edwards, along with 14 from Clark and Tyea Ladoo. St Vincent got another double-double from Vasha Adams, with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

USVI whip Barbados

The US Virgin Islands defeated Barbados 98-47 to claim third place. The USVI were led by Brittney Matthew with 20 points, along with Yanique Javois 17 while Natalie Day chipped in 14.

In the first 4:55 minutes of play, the US Virgin Islands started off the game on an 11-2 run.

Remaining hot to start the fourth, the USVI went on an 11-1 run in the first 4:30 minutes and, despite the valiant efforts from Barbados in the last period of play, it was too much of a deficit to climb out of.

Dale-Marie Cumberbatch had 12 points and Toni Atherley added 11 for Barbados in their losing efforts.

If you don't have strategy, support cant do nothing for you. Cause I will be screaming to the top of my lungs "YAAY GO TEAM BVI" and they will still be lackluster.
