DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI: Basketball in the Virgin Islands will reach an exciting climax with the most competitive event ever this weekend, the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League.

Championship weekend starts this Friday, October 19, 2018, and will run until Sunday, October 21, 2018, in both the junior and senior divisions.

The first game in the best out of three will kick off at 6:30 PM at the Save the Seed Energy Centre, where Junior Bayside Blazers will take on Young Starz. The Young Starz is coached by veteran Ronald Simmonds and the Junior Bayside Blazers is coached by Nathaniel J. Malone and assisted by Vancito E. Pickering.

Best out of 3

It will be a battle between some of the best players in the age group 13-17 years old, Junior Bayside Blazers are the underdog according to sporting pundits.

In the senior division, Coach Simmonds’ presence will be felt while coaching the Pure Playaz, a team ready to take on the Senior Bayside Blazers again in the best out of three. The Senior Bayside Blazers Head coach is Rhennie O. Phipps and he is assisted by Jason A. Edwin.

With high stakes, this is expected to be a battle royal as teams are playing for gold rings. The teams are said to be evenly matched with Pure Playaz draft pick being Ray D. Victor.  Whoever wins this weekend will be crown the 2017/2018 Champions and the senior division winner will have their banner erected in the roof at the Save the Seed Energy centre, the home of the games with winners receiving gold rings.

History of winners

In 2013 Ruff House was the first championship team in the Hon Fraser League. Bayside Blazers were the champs in 2014, while West Gunners were the 2015 victors. Splash Brothers took the crown in 2016, and a new team will be crown this weekend.  However, history could be made if Bayside Blazers win again giving them the title of being the only team to win twice.

The Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League was founded in 2013 by Hon Julian Fraser, Representative of the Third District, and Bishop John I. Cline founder of the Save the Seed Energy centre.

They are both the founding Directors of the League that is governed by the International Basketball Federation rules and endorsed by the BVI Basketball Federation. It has its own by-laws and governing committee.

This year, the Hon Julian Fraser Basketball League continued from 2017 where it was postponed due to the devastations of category 5 Hurricanes, Irma and Maria that ravaged the territory.
