‘Audited financial statements to be presented soon’ – Premier Smith

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon D. Orlando Smith said that the country’s audited financial reports will be presented to the House of Assembly soon, following months of criticism by the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP).

He was speaking on Thursday July 16, 2015 at the Central Administration Complex during a press briefing during which he touched on a number of issues.

“As I said a few months ago, several of the audited reports were sent to the House of Assembly to be returned to the Chief Auditor and then to the House of Assembly. I think that those were for 2010 and 2011,” he said.

But he said that the others for later years will be presented towards the end of the year. “There are those that are being worked on and will be presented most certainly by the end of the [third] quarter of this year,” he said.

Hard to believe the Premier

During the campaign trail for the last elections, Representative for the First District Honourable Andrew A. Fahie pressured the National Democratic Party Government for their failure to present up to date audited financial statements to the House of Assembly.

Honourable Fahie said because of the inconsistencies in the numbers given by the Premier it is hard for him to believe whatever comes out of the Premier and the Government in terms of figures.

“How could you believe these figures when you have a Minister of Finance that came to the House of Assembly and gives four to five different balances for accounts for monies spent? For one question you get four to five different figures as the balances,” he had asked.

The ever vigilant Hon Fahie has been criticised by the National Democratic Party (NDP) members who have challenged him to produce the evidence of corruption, however, Hon Fahie has maintained his stance that the NDP is practising corruption and their refusal to answer questions of transparency on spending and producing accurate information to the House of Assembly are enough evidence that the ruling NDP is corrupt.

These NDPs will be worst than before from all that I am seeing. The Governor will have to step in to save us, bring some accountability and a hault to some of these unnecessary spending. We need an audit from the Hospital also.

The Audited statements I want to see is the BVIHSA before and after J..n especially the contract and payments to his companies. I want to see the pay (hush) packages of the senior executives including the bonuses and I want to see the consultancy contracts for cousins and friends. There are a lot of rat minding cheese and it needs to come out in the open.

Dr. Smith is promising to have the reports before the end of the third quarter since he will have to complete them before the goes to the UK in November. We may not like to have the UK breathing down our backs but without this we are doomed.

The Premier and others always seem to try to justify their actions by saying coming soon!
