ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The BVIAA’s 4th Development Meet took place on Saturday January 25, 2014 with some great personal duels, highlighted by Izariah Frett, with a treble of wins, a whole host of double victories and a thrilling neck and neck 100m race between Shiain Vanderberg and Taylor Hill.

Top Notch Track Club Athlete, Frett, began her day with victory in the 300m in 46.73 seconds, outdoing Ariyah Smith, who ran 49.33 with Kaelyah Liburd of Raw Skills Track Club,  third in 51.66. With a winning with a leap of 3.77m, she then held off a challenge from Smith (3.47) in the Girls U11 Long Jump. Akeela McMaster finished third with 3.38m.

Frett followed this up with her winning time of 11.48 in the 80m which was too fast for the rest of the field, but Abriel Magloire, also of Top Notch, came second in 11.92 and Liburd third in 12.23.

Kybah Dawson (TNTC) won the Boys U11 Long Jump, with a distance of 4.10m, by a centimeter from team mate Shael Lavacia. Fast Lane’s Caryliek Benjamin finished 3rd with 4.06m.

Dawson completed a double with a win in the 300m, when he crossed the line in 47.64.

In the U13 Girls, Sprint Tech’s Dominique Moses underlined her potential with a winning distance of 3.90m to better the 3.72m leap of Xiomora Malone (TNTC). Kristin Abraham though, caught the eye of the Coaches, leaping as an unattached athlete, with 3.40m.

Malone would later claim a double victory in the U13 100m Dash, running 13.85 ahead of FLTC runner, D’Neigh Williams in 13.88, and clearing 1.35m in the U15 High Jump ahead of Arianna Hayde (STTC), who leapt 1.30m.

In the Boys U13 Long Jump, J’Quan Smith (FLTC) saved his best until last with a leap of 4.34m to claim victory over Koen Penn (TNTC), whose 4.13m leap, had seen him in the lead until the last round.

Burt “Percy” Dorsette, who was keeping a watchful eye on the young Jumpers, commented that he had seen some new talent “Kristin Abraham, Kenyatta Grate (3.16) and Moses all jumped really well and there was definitely a lot of new talent on show today.”

Dorsette, who works with the Youngsters for STTC, is also happy with the way things are going generally.

“We are looking to build well rounded athletes” he said “not just for sprinting, but in every area. The youngsters are responding to what they are being asked to do and with every stride they take want to move forward.”

In other field events Top Notch’s, Tynelle and Trevia Gumbs continued to dominate with a Shot Put heave of 11.48m and a Discuss distance of 38.14m and a Javelin throw of 38.40m respectively.

Kevin Vanterpool threw the discus 33.70m and the Shot Put 11.69m.

Kala Penn hoppped, skipped and jumped 11.51m in the Triple Jump, finishing ahead of Sh’Kaida Lavacia, who landed 10.27m.

Jelani Norman recorded a track double with wins in the Boys U15 100m (12.50 seconds, with Joshua just behind in 12.92) and the 400m with a time of 56.92 beating Sprint Tech team mate, Vadley Sylvester.

“I could have run faster, but today didn’t feel like a normal day. I don’t think the rain affected much, but last night (Friday) I was ready to do my thing, but the rain came and today I wasn’t as prepared to run.”

Zakariah Frett (STTC) also continued her good start to the season with a 12.92 winning time in the Girls U15 100m ahead of team mates Beyonce Defreitas (2nd in 13.07) and Shakayla Martin (3rd in 14.07).

Akada Charles (1:03.60), Naya Penn (1:06.18), Martin (1:07.41) and Kayla Freeman (1:14.04) ran the 400m. Alisha Hayde beat Dominique Moses in the 600m and Deya Erickson was pushed around the 400m Hurdles by Arianna Hayde to win in a time of 1:09.12 to complete the top performers for Sprint Tech in the younger age brackets.

L’Tsha Fahie won the U18 100m edging out Kala Penn, 12.43 to 12.88, with the Raw Skills pair of Shaniyah Caul (13.33) and Gezira Alexander (13.55), third and fourth respectively.

Tarika Moses ran the 600m in a time of 1:32.86 ahead of Mariah Christian (1:58.44), J’Sally O’Neal (2:06.07) and T’Keyah Richardson (2:14.75), all of Raw Skills.

The Meet had seen some good performances from Raw Skills who had only learnt of Friday’s postponement as they boarded the Ferry from Virgin Gorda, but as Coach Irwin “Reds”Telemaque explained, “Basically the day went ok, but in and out of the rain and in an out of the warm ups we weren’t fully prepared and we weren’t as aggressive as we wanted to be today. The postponement messed up our plans from Friday, but it’s a learning process, the Kids aren’t used to it and maybe that’s why it’s called development.”

The Boys U18 100m went to Kohun Eugene from St Thomas in a time of 11.41, with Ronique Todman of FLTC second in 11.72. Third was Nyhne Daniel from St Croix in 11.94. Kohun was beaten into second in the 400m by Akeem Bradshaw, 52.13 to 53.07. Bradshaw had earlier won the Triple Jump with a distance of 12.63, ahead of Aundre Turnbull’s 11.57 to record a double success on the day.

However the race of the day featured Taylor Hill and Shiain Vanderberg who sped down the 100m with barely a step between them. Hill got the faster start, Vanderberg seemed to catch up and then take a narrow lead half way down, but Hill used a deadly finish and lunge at the line to win the race by a neck.

Hill’s time was 12.58, Vandenberg’s 12.66 and Kasheema Fleming came third with a time of 13.43.
