ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Teachers at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS) are taking a lead role in showing that they are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their students get the best shot at the highest level of teaching.

And while most educators this time of the year are getting a well-deserved break, Principal Marieta C. Flax-Headley, her Assistant Principals, and other staff of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS) are attending the International Literacy Association (ILA) Conference 2016 from July 7-11, 2016 in Boston, USA.

The International Literacy Association (ILA) is a global advocacy and membership organisation of more than 300,000 literacy educators, researchers, and experts across 75 countries. With over 60 years of experience, ILA has set the standard for how literacy is defined, taught, and evaluated.

“Teachers are always seeking new strategies they may use to reach their students...what worked before might not work for today's students so the conference gives us the opportunity to improve our craft. Not only improve but gives us new strategies that we can use, to not only help the struggling students, but also how to push those at the top even further,” Principal Marieta C. Flax-Headley told this news site in an exclusive interview on July 5, 2016.

‎According to Flax-Headley, the conference is designed to energise and empower educators as they discover new teaching methods and tools needed to transform lives through literacy in the classroom and beyond.

While attending the conference, the group will be exposed to topics such as: Laying the Ground Work for Success: Foundational Skills to Support Lifelong Learning, Writing in Every Classroom: A Framework for School-wide Learning Communities, How to Motivate Elementary Age Boys to Engage in Reading and lots, lots more.

ASPS team

The group consists of Principal Headley, Assistant Principals, Ronda D. Smith and Kesia M. King, Year Heads: Grade 2- Mrs Shirley Martin Grade 3- Ms Debra Todman, Grade 4- Mr Binns Nickie, Grade 5- Mrs Judith Martin, and Grade 6- Mrs Sonia Dennis. Attending the conference also is Ms Lucinda Gordon, Resource and Reading and Mrs Jennifer Cupid- Grade 5 teacher. The group will join teachers of the Elmore Stoutt High School's English Department who are also attending the conference.

Asked if this is the first time they are attending the conference, Ms Flax-Headley said, “Yes it’s the first time the school is doing something of this kind. We hope to do it annually and we would certainly hope to have more teachers take advantage of the opportunity.”

Funding for the conference was made possible by friends and parents of the teachers and through fundraisers held during the school year.

Upon their return, it is expected that the educators will share all that they were exposed to with their colleagues during the school’s in-house professional development sessions for the new school year.

Among the general speakers for the conference this year are Adora Svitak Author- speaker and literacy advocate, Kwame Alexander Award- winning author and literacy advocate, Ana Dodson Charity- founder and reading support specialist, Steven Duggan- Microsoft's Director of Worldwide Education Strategy and Laurie Halse Anderson- New York Times bestselling author.

Don't forget Sean Henry representing the Ebenezer Thomas Primary. Paying his own way and striving to develop his schools library based on information gained and samples collected. I would also add that all teachers need this sort of gathering at it helps to nourish their ability to grow professionally.

Clearly you know nothing about this school... We loved our graduation...short and sweet.... Whatever we were to get we got at awards ceremony. Our teachers work for whatever they want. They don't need to steal, maybe that's what you do at your workplace.

What does Mrs. Headley been fat as you claim have to do with education? Is it her fat teaching the children? Hatred and jealousy wouldn’t get you anywhere. She is a damn good, no-nonsense, none impartial and professional educator and principal best ever. Maybe the BVI needs her or a woman like her to sit in Myron chair to run the education department properly without such a mess,

A sick wave of jealousy is slowly taking hold of the society what does people's personal life and looks have to do with producing the goods . We have to help and build our society so is there harm in providing the means . Why everything is Minister Myron ? Some initiatives would have immediate effect ; some would take time and some might have to be revisited . Stop it . Those who complain the most are those who want to do anything without monetary gains . The Minister would be there for a long time Get over your foolish attitude
