ASP & BFEC took top Edu awards
The event held this year at the Cutlass Tower saw teachers, schools, principals and educators being awarded for their service in the education system of the Virgin Islands. While there were a number of teachers who copped the ‘Teacher of the Year’ awards, the Althea Scatfiffe Primary School on Tortola and the Bregado Flax Educational Centre of Virgin Gorda walked away with this year’s School of the year awards, primary and secondary respectively.
Of the many teachers that received awards this year it was noticeable that only two were male, Mr Caave K. Stoutt of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and Mr Lyn Weekes of the Bregado Education Centre.
Speaking briefly at the ceremony last evening March 15, 2014, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn applauded the teachers for sticking to the tasks of molding the young minds of the Territory despite the challenges. He alluded to the awards ceremony as a very fitting way to end the 2014.
“Tonight we celebrate the true stars in the Territory, educators past and present throughout the Virgin Islands,” Hon Walwyn stated. “Teachers in our community you have become surrogate parents, counselors, protectors, detectives and advocates for our children.”
“The truth about good teachers is that their lessons always remain with us. The best educators have the capacity to teach their students important life lessons that their students connect with and use to propel them to success,” noted Hon Walwyn.
He told the educators that he is thankful that in the VI the society was built under the instruction and with the care of educators who had invested so much of themselves in the lives of their students.
Present also to acknowledge the accomplishments of the educators of the Virgin Islands was Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith. “We thank you for what you are doing to assist families in this Territory in preparing the radiant daughters and sons to continue with the baton of hope, purpose and destiny,” Premier Smith told the teachers.
In congratulating the awardees he told teachers that his government continues to hold education in high regard in the move towards building a better VI. “We will continue to raise the bar and I know you join us because you love our children,” he told the audience.
The Teacher of the Year Award began in the late 1990s to 2001 and then was held again in 2005. The programme was reinstated last year 2013 in the form of a dinner award ceremony. The teachers' recognition programme is geared towards recognizing exemplary educators in the public education system of the VI.

Offer to do something to better the country.
They have no time for the private schools, but next year closer to election they will be invited for two reasons, more money in pocket and looking votes because chess is up and thinks he will win because the base saying to him; do not worry about anything we not going back to VIP…poor child
The cocktail was a waste of time. I am sorry for the teachers who had high heeled shoes and were experiencing excruciating pain to their feet during the function. I was told that the facility was not comfortable. No wonder Mr Weekes collapsed at the ceremony. However, I want to congratulate B.F.E.C and Mr Weekes for a job well done.
Just lift your hands to the sky ,say thank you lord and let God have his way.
