Ashemba Frett facing 20 years in prison for alien smuggling

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI — Ashemba Frett, 22, of Tortola, [British] Virgin Islands, made his initial appearance before US Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller after being charged in a complaint with encouraging and inducing aliens to illegally enter the United States, United States Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe announced on Tuesday February 16, 2016.

Judge Miller released Mr Frett to the custody of a third-party custodian and ordered him to post a $10,000 unsecured bond.

According to the complaint, on February 14, 2016, the United States Coast Guard (U.S.C.G.) conducted a safety stop on a vessel in US waters. The vessel was operated by Mr Frett and an unidentified individual who jumped overboard prior to the vessel being stopped. A Haitian national and a national from the Dominican Republic were on board the vessel. Neither the Haitian nor the Dominican Republic national possessed documents to lawfully enter the United States.

Under federal law if convicted of illegally encouraging and inducing aliens to enter the United States, Mr Frett faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and in the case of a violation in which the offense was done for the purpose of private financial gain, not more than 10 years’ imprisonment.

This case is being investigated by US Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine Operations, the USCG and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sigrid M. Tejo-Sprotte.

United States Attorney Sharpe reminds the public that a complaint is merely a formal charging document and is not evidence of guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

@ drug man: keep fooling yourselves, these things been going on long before NDP and will continue to go on long after NDP: more persons are being caught now simply because of informers . when arrest are made those arrested are takling and giving information on each other in oder to get less jail time...there is a price to pay for everything that you do in life(keep the faith)

I agree with Wize up 100%. If a rat is corned, he is going to snitch another out just to get out of that corner. It is the same as you don't take a knife to a gun fight.

You could do what you want in Tola simple because you were born there. When you decide to export your crimes you are in the Big League...no one is going to let you off, your crimes are not celebrated... you are just innocent until proven guilty. Parents when your child do wrong correct them and start when they are young....really..really young.

Part of supporting your son is accepting when he does wrong. You are not to blame for his actions. He took a life and he needs to ask for forgiveness from God.

Whenever anybody from of this "group" of criminals get caught doing WRONG you see all the idiot posts bigging them up & promoting the bull bout ppl jealous yadda yadda but I keep saying it over & over that it's only a matter of time before they all get their comeuppance. It's very clear that no not one of them taking stock of their lives & looking for a better & brighter future for themselves they rather promote a lifestyle that when you look at it only 2 things is inevitable....death or jail. I suppose the thought of being somebody positive or a stand up role model in our society as oppose to being a 2 bit criminal isn't as appeasing.

It don't seems like Ashemba would be seeing Tola in anytime soon, now that they find Chance body. He's likely to be charge for manslaughter as he was the captain of the boat. Look trouble, glad ain't Tola it happen. What! That's three out of the SOB gone down in the past few weeks, not looking good. The others better start getting their act together fast.
