Arliene Penn appointed Director of Communications

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Governor Boyd McCleary, CMG, CVO acting on the advice of the Public Service Commission, has approved the appointment of Arliene T. Penn to the post of Director of Communications in the Premier’s Office, a press release from the Government Informatin Service (GIS) stated.

Mrs. Penn, who took up her appointment on October 1, holds a Certificate in Future Global Leadership Development from the University of the Virgin Islands and an Associate Degree in Business Administration: Marketing Concentration with honours from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, which she completed in June 2004.

She also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and a Master of Arts in Public Communication with honours from the American University (AU) School of Communications (SOC), Washington, District of Columbia (DC) in the United States of America (USA) in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Mrs. Penn also holds a Master of Science Degree in Leadership from Capella University, School of Business and Technology, with a 4.0 GPA from Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2011.

Mrs. Penn began her employment as Traffic Director Station Manager at ZROD Radio Station 103.7 FM from 1995-2001. She also worked as a Resort Food and Beverage Sales Representative/Marketing Assistant with Road Town Wholesale Trading Limited from 2001-2004.

During her time at AU, Mrs. Penn served as Graduate Assistant to the Director of Public Communications in Spring 2010. She also worked as Public Relations Intern with Ricochet Public Relations in New York in the Summer and Fall of 2010.

Mrs. Penn joined the Public Service in February, 2004 and was appointed as Assistant Information Officer, Department of Information & Public Relations. She was appointed to act as Information Officer I in 2004 and was subsequently confirmed in the post until her recent appointment.

During this period she was assigned to work in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Ministry of Natural Resources & Labour, Ministry of Education & Culture and Premier’s Office.

As Director of Communications Mrs. Penn will serve as Press Secretary to the Premier and manage his or her public profile; write speeches and messages; coordinate requests and media enquiries from local, regional and international press.

Additionally, Mrs. Penn will advise Ministers and members of Government on how to deal with the media, help them maintain a positive image and avoid negative media coverage; and oversee and provide overall strategic direction for the Department of Information and Public Relations, among other duties.
