ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A large crowd at the Tortola Sports Club witnessed what could become the beginning of a new squash dynasty on Saturday June 22, 2013 when Argentina's Gonzalo Miranda won the BVI Open, the first PSA World Tour title of his career in straight games, 11-2, 11-2, 11-4.

The conclusion of the second BVI Open Squash Championship, a PSA Challenger 5 event, also saw an all South American final with the top seed Miranda dethroning defending champion Christopher Binnie, the third seed from Jamaica, in the semi-finals.

Unseeded Brazilian Manoel Pereira, ranked outside the world top 200, made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals where he defeated fourth-seeded Canadian Thomas Brinkman. A semi-final win over Englishman Tom Pashley took the 28-year-old from Sao Paulo into the first Tour final of his career.

Pashley had also taken care of Joe Chapman in the first round to shock the partisan crowd that was hoping he would progress further than last year when he also fell at the first hurdle.

But Miranda, the 23-year-old world No84 from La Plata, was on top throughout the final - despatching Pereira 11-2, 11-2, 11-4 in 37 minutes to take the trophy.

All of the BVI’s interest in local players ceased during the first round with, apart from Chapman going out, qualifiers Dion Anselm, Rory Thornton, Mike Adamson, Neville Sorrentino and Stefan Joseph all crashed out.

When we locals get on these blogs and talk about the indigenius sports are basketball and horse racing, do you expect to find black locals playing squash at this level. The local whites will have to do it since we only play basketball. Don't feel no way; just go out there and make yourself available to play the sport, then go out and represent us.
