‘Are we being used as a bunch of monkeys?' – Edmund G. Maduro

- blasts Minister for Education & Culture Hon Walwyn V. Walwyn
Radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro has slammed Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn for remaining silent on what some are calling Government’s abuse of persons’ constitutional rights by forcing the National Health Insurance (NHI) on the population in a compulsory manner. Maduro was speaking last night November 12, 2015 on his EGM Show aired between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM on ZROD 103.7 FM. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro has slammed Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn for remaining silent on what some are calling Government’s abuse of persons’ constitutional rights by forcing the National Health Insurance (NHI) on the population in a compulsory manner.

Mr Maduro was speaking last night November 12, 2015 on his EGM Show aired between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM on ZROD 103.7 FM.

According to Mr Maduro, Honourable Walwyn is silent as his Government continues to "perpetrate the abuse" and this does not sit well with earlier comments the Minister is said to have made to a group of young people at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College recently.

“I know he may not want me to say this but I have to say this. He has said this to the little children and if he has said it to the little children he will be negligent not to say it to his elected group, to his elected party. What is he hiding from the people?” asked Mr Maduro.

“Don’t forget what the Honourable Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn who is also a qualified lawyer said to the youth group when he told them that no law can be made by Government that is contrary to the Constitution,” he said.

“But has [Honourable Walwyn] said this to the Government of the day? Has he said it to the Premier? Then why are we having this gross historical abuse? Do we have to ask the Queen to come in?” he pondered.

Mr Maduro asked whether Cabinet does not consider the implications of laws that breach people’s rights under the Constitution.

“Are we being used as a bunch of monkeys like in the days past? Are we being discriminated against? My people these are serious times.”

The talk show host is a part of the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group which presented a petition to Premier Smith on October 13, 2015 but to which the Premier has thus far made no response. The NHI comes fully into operation on January 1, 2016.

While the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group is not against the controversial NHI, it wishes to see some changes made to the scheme in its current form. It is totally against the scheme being mandatory.

Myron really hasn't said a word publicly about NHI. No one knows where he stands on this issue and he is in the government.

And if he comes out strongly on it you would ask why he doesn't let Ronnie do his job. Just like when he was adamant about youth unemployment and the ignorant @$$e$ made it into a fight between him and Kedrick. You all are too damn ignorant and petty in this place. Myron is working for our youth and doing a damn good job. As for Edmund, he was Chief Immigration Officer in the BVI for many many years. What is his legacy? All of a sudden he knows about rights and what's best for BVI?

@LOL Who the hell you think responsible for hiring the same people that dont do their job? Who you think responsible for the LACK of educational morale of the BVI. What the hell do you think REPRESENTATIVE means? These people supposed to REPRESENT the people's ideals and best interest of the territory. Raise the young generation as kings and queens and they will grow up to be respectful and act as such. We losing focus when we try to fix the spoiled fruits........STOP THE BLEEDING FIRST AND IT STARTS WITH THE CHILDREN! Teach them how important the environment is to US so when they grow up we dont have to wait till half our plants and animals die off to say hey lets try and fix this! Teach them the importance of the marine industry, teach them things that BUILD pride in their nation rather than promoting this washed out corporate mentality that they seem to have. There is NO skill whatsoever sitting behind a desk pulling strings and telling people what to do. Most of these people here in high positions have them because of the pay and not because they love what they do so they can run a muck and dont care! Of course this generation getting used like monkey because thats the level of BS they been putting into their generation before and never teach them to think!

@ LOL; maduro did nothing substantial for this territory and had great opportunity to create policy while he held a very strategic position in government for years: maduro need to take a good look in a mirrow then ask himself what have I done for the benefit of his people before getting on other people's case week after week( at least the radio station makes money from him)

Wait until the thugs start closing down the private medical clinics one by one under the guise of "regulation" so all the NHI money can go to the Peebles eternity hospital. This will be the last straw in the NHI plan to pay for the New Peebles financial sinkhole

I agree with you its all a big sham; government is now the new health underwriters. A lot of people might not like Edmund but at lease he gives us the avenue of free speech and talking out. Instead of ridicule he should be applauded for doing just that... He has the biggest balls of them all in my land of silence. Especially when our leaders shoveling s%#* down our throats and we only grumble as we swallow. And there is no opposition lord help us

Hon Walwyn was the top vote-getter in the recent election. This kind of mandate should not be taken lightly. His silence is truly deafening and I too saw the comments to the youth as a subtle hint at the course of action that is necessary. MVW being the consummate politician he is knows very well that the NHI is unpopular hence the reason why he has kept his distance. I do not recall him being at the launch of the NHI where the other 4 ministers were very vocal in their support for it and he has made no comments thereafter in his support for it.

My advice to MVW is that this is not the time to play politics with the people's health.

NHI is a done deal. People can protest and sign petition all they want, it will not change anything. I done realize that.

I find it inappropriate, premature and foolish to start criticizing the NHI for "failures" when the dust hasn't even settled and the facts have yet to be sorted out on this programme
