‘Are VIslanders only good to cast votes?’- Radio caller asks

- as public expresses concern over BVIHSA CEO appointment
The appointment of new BVIHSA CEO Paula G. Chester-Cumberbatch (left) has sparked fresh concerns about Virgin Islanders being shut out in their own country. Talk show host Doug Wheatley (right) is one of those persons. Photo: Facebook/VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Several callers to the Speak Out BVI Talk Show with Doug Wheatley on Tuesday September 6, 2016 were not happy with the latest announcement that a Trinidadian was chosen over a Virgin Islander to be the new boss of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) because she was the most qualified.

The new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Paula G. Chester-Cumberbatch, was given the nod over local applicant Dr Ronald E. Georges and she will be replacing Darlene Carty-Baptiste in early October of this year.

Using the airwaves to voice their displeasure, several callers to the radio show said this is not the first time that a non-native has swept top positions in the territory and it is not a good practice.

One caller referred to the matter as “ludicrous” saying that the locals should be “up in arms” about the whole situation. He questioned the reason behind the matter, adding that there are locals that attended colleges and universities who are capable of doing the job.

Only good for a vote?

A female caller who also added her voice to the discussion queried whether VIslanders were only good to cast votes and they are forgotten right afterward? “This is nothing new,” the female caller said in disgust.

This news site had first and accurately reported on the name of the new BVIHSA CEO on Monday September 5, 2016, following which the BVIHSA confirmed our story at a press conference the same day at Peebles Hospital.

A total of 22 applicants were said to have shown an interest in the post.

Chester-Cumberbatch’s duties include management of Peebles Hospital and all other medical facilities, be an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors as well as handle the communication and marketing arm of the BVIHSA.

This could cause a problem-Wheatley

“There is a general feeling which I get from local people that they no longer feel that they have a stake in their territory and this is very disturbing to them because they see benefits going to others and this is something that we have to be careful with in dealing with that situation, it can create a problem,” Wheatley opined.

He said the authorities may have to consider going back to the drawing board.

In 2012 almost one year after Chester-Cumberbatch was fired as Chief Executive Officer of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) for not issuing suspension letters to medical professionals under investigation in the death of a young mother, she was appointed in the same position, only this time in the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA).

the only time some of us gets the attention of the politician is leading up to an election after that we are of no value unless you are part of their inner circle....when last any of the elected officials visited your home however if you cast you mind back to just before elections they were all over your living room rug: 365 day in the year following an election none on them can spear a day to listen to your concerns:

Exactly! And they don't have this victim/entitlement mentality which seems to feature so strongly here. Stop expecting government to do for you and go and do for yourself. In most countries there would be very little or no personal interaction between voters and elected officials, just because there is here does not mean we should expect personal favours.

In most countries that are 24 sq miles on the main island? You can't possibly be comparing little BVI to countries like USA Canada...go away twit stop looking justification for your nonsense

The people leave just like why you left your country for opportunity but the jackasses here on a 40mile territory took the advantage of local employment for local ppl to help themselves and now that they are the legislators have abandoned the common sense

There are locals more qualified for the post but the NDP is playing politics and don't want them involved. They would prefer the whole thing be destroyed than let the best & most qualified do the work. Sick spitefulness of this nature is a sign or either mental illness or evil. They know who these people are as they've always known and are constantly reminded that they are there. Your parents would be ashamed of all of you NDPers and you lost the respect of your peers so you have to cater to foreigners b/c you can't face those who know you.

I remember one time a long time ago our education system hired a very nice and qualified teacher with his doctoral degree to teach science in the BVI. He was paid a high salary with all kinds of benefits. Thanks to the government of St. Martin I think it was to uncover the Dr. who scammed the BVI out of thousands of dollars plus housing. I guess we just do not learn. I now have a clear understanding why our own people stay overseas. They are treated with much more respect. You send us to school and you trained us but you still do not have any confidence in us. Wow.

The sad thing is that because of Dr. Smith's service to the country, everyone believed he had the interest of the county and its people at heart, as I do. I think he does too. The problem is Dr. Smith's lack of leadership ability. He is unable to lead, so there is no accountability and no coherence or principle guided actions. And even if he does not believe what is done should have been done, once done, Dr. Smith has no ability to hold anyone to account, and demand corrective action. I t just in his makeup. He would rather twist himself into a screw to justify any wrong decision to make it appear to reflect better on HIM. Ego manifest in all forms.

I suppose that there are other people in the world more qualified than all the Caribbean people who hold positions in their various countries in the Region, but those Caribbean nations do not invite the brightest in the world to apply for those national positions just because there are more qualified persons. That must have something to do with the values of a country in fostering the welfare and development of its own nationals, and the capacity of the leaders of those countries to identify with the people they lead. But of course, that would be highly unreasonable in the BVI, which apparently exists to develop every other country's nationals while its own are decimated by the decisions made by the elected leaders against the electorate. i encourage our politicians to see what has happened to native populations in North America and Australia. What a ROV (return on vote!) for BVislanders

All those leaders in the NDP were given a chance when they got back home from school. Some took forever to finish but when they came they were given a chance. Some made big mistakes but we're never treated like trash. Now they think they are bigger than life and calling down our people who are more educated and qualified than they were when they came. I find this group to be inconsiderate and corrupt. Cut out the nonsense. Put our health service back under goverment. Stop paying out large salaries to top people in the BVIHA and pay doctors and nurses reasonable salaries so they can be happy serving this community. If this nonsense continues the people of this territory need to march and call. For early election. All concerned are behaving like crabs in a barrel.

@voice I agree with you 100%. The people of the BVI need to form marches and demonstrations in letting their voices be heard. How long are we going to sit down and do nothing? People need to stand up and support the integrity and growth of our own instead of bashing them with negativity and personal dislikes. How can we progress as One when we are dividing and putting each other down. It is up to the Baby Boomers, and the Generations X,Y,Z, to take the hammer and strike it down. Enough is Enough! We cannot allow for this displaying of indifferences to continue. Like I would repeat myself! Stop the hating and tearing down of each other, take a stand and be as ONE!
People learn from the Past and build for the Future!
