Amsterdam secures Dive BVI 5K Series Men’s Championship

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Emrol Amsterdam locked up the overall title of the 2013 Dive BVI 5K Series with his victory during last Saturday’s 5K race on Virgin Gorda.

Amsterdam covered the 3.1 mile course from the Virgin Gorda HLSCC Center out to Guava Berry Villas and returned in 19 minutes and 29 seconds. He was followed by Ravi Sukhu in 19:41 and Steven Asson in 19:50.

Kathleen Brownsdon led the women’s field in 21:34. NiMade Oniash followed in 23:07 with Barenic Garcia third in 23:19.

The series finale is scheduled for March 16 and will be followed by the Dive BVI 10K on April 4, 2013 leading up to the 2nd Virgin Gorda Half Marathon on May 18, 2013.

Meanwhile, the 6th Blenheim Trust 5K Series kicks off this Saturday, March 2, 2013 on Tortola at 7 a.m. on Saturday, at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

The series comprise 5 races in the same format as prior years.  Trophies will be awarded for overall, age groups and participation.  The best 3 races count towards overall and a minimum of 3 races are required for a participation trophy.

“ The race will start on the Mondo track at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds at 7.00am. The course is the famous “City Circuit” and new for  2013 5k will be a seperate power walking division,” commented Race Organiser Kay Reddy. “In power walking one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times any jogging will reclassify an entrant to the running category.”

Virgin Gorda has already thrown down the gauntlet with a massive attendance of 76 at the Dive BVI 5k race.  Dive BVI has also kindly extended their support to provide transport for any V.G. runners wishing to participate on Saturday.

Registration begins at 6:30am and the course takes the race from the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds to the Bobby’s Roundabout, over to Central Administration Complex, on Waterfront Drive, down to the Hospital, up Main Street, through Lower Estate on the fringes of Huntums Ghut, out to the Stop Light and back to the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

The series, which will have stops in Beef Island, Carrot Bay and Paraquita Bay, runs through the end of May.
