ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Department of Human Resources – Office of the Deputy Governor is reporting that for 2012 the amount for financial assistance for travelling between islands was reduced from $90,200 to $73,100 resulting in insufficient resources to provide assistance to public officers traveling between Sister Islands.

This is contained in the 2012 report of the Human Resources Department laid on the table of the House of Assembly on April 17, 2014.

It said that for the year under review, 56 persons were due a total of $92,037. The report said officers are paid $81 per day period.

“This subhead was reduced from $90,200 to $73,100 for 2012. With this decrease, the commuter allowance subhead is not sufficient to provide this assistance grant to all public officers commuting from the Sister Islands,” said the report.

why $81.00 a day when the ferry only costs $30.00 return and only $90.00 for a 5 day return. So just to be clear travel for a week costs $90.00 but they pay $405.00 and they still complaining!

It is 81 per week n 162 per pay period since we get paid bi-weekly...n it is not sufficient seeing that there are workers who are at the bottom of the scale!!!!!

It is about time the HR Dept do something about person getting telephone allowance and still a government phone. Some get car allowance, travel allowance and still commuter allowance. Think the time has come to make some decisions.

Govenment pays $81.00 per week. The boat fare is 90 dollars. Do the math since you feel like we are complaining. We are grateful to government although they do not cover the entire cost. We a thankful

Travelers pay $90.00/wk and government gives back $81.00 every two weeks. It is sad when elected Reps are paid to stay in their own homes, given telephone, entertainment, and travel allowances. We are greatful but how selffish can you get. This is indeed a selfish act.

Well sah ayo really don't like VG people!!!! When the Tortola people going VG to work ayo does pay the full fare, lunch and if them staying VG for overnight, or for a week you put them in a hotel and pay the entire cost and if them VG for a month or more you pay full apartment rent!!!! Now when Tola people coming VG to work why dem can't commute everyday????? I guess cause them hate sailing and VG people love the sea!!!!!! Time to get the 3rd admin building up in VG so that the VG people don't need to come to the stingy island of Tortola!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so its a misprint by the newsite, i apologise, but on the other side of the coin is if you want to live on VG then find a job on VG. I can state a fact that it is very hard to find workers on VG, yet all these workers want to work on Tortola but live on VG. They want to take the job accept the terms as offered then start bitching!

Reading and Comprehension is obviously a problem for most of us........ The stipend is for public officers not government workers living on Virgin Gorda and working in Tortola. In my opinion they need not travel to the Sister Islands because it's just a day at the beach for most of them, they do no work whatsoever and they need no more than what they currently receive. Stop the blah-blah.

I have a question. Does Private Companies pay boat fare for employees living on VG to work on Tortola? Why yall think the government should be doing everything? They giving back and yall still complaining. Even if it is 2cent, they giving back. I AM from Virgin Gorda and work for the Government. I too travel to town everyday to work. No, i am not a high end paid employee either. I live on a budget and i am guided by that. And i will say the following without fear, MOST of the Virgin Gorda workers are "slackers". If it rains, even drizzle, most of us dont get up out yall beds to catch the boat. The conversations on the boats in the mornings "mehson, meen doing nothing much today at all" "Yow, dah 1:3 boat aint going back VG leave me" and the list goes on. When we are abscent from work so often or show little or no interest in your job how can we complain about travel fare. We should be thankful that we recieve a salary and that the government is assisting us with travel fare.

Short and simple response to your comment: YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT FROM VIRGIN GORDA! STAY YOUR HATING BEHIND TOLA BEHIND DA COMPUTER SCREEN!

So can someone tell me who pays for the VG workers who work at banks, Trust companies and other non-government employers? Who pays for them? Do they get a different travel fare? Why is this even news? I say who ever gets back a dime need to be thankful they get anything at all. People travel miles by bus and train to work in snow, rain and floods with no reimbursements. Only in the Virgin Islands. But this is the lifestyle the VIP has gotten people accustomed to all for a vote. It should be discontinued period. Increase salaries by 2- 4% and stop giving back any money!!! Times hard for the government too. Regardless of which party in power!!!

The allowance has nothing to do with politics and is a programme under the human resource department.
