Alleged RT station attacker to know fate during HC assizes

Simon has pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Mitigation and sentencing for Kareem Simon, one of the four men who allegedly stormed into the Road Town Police Station last year, is likely to be heard in the High Court as early as next week during the High Court criminal assizes, Virgin Islands News Online was reliably informed.

The assizes will open this morning, February 7, 2012 before Justice Rita Olivetti.

Simon had pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary in the High Court during the last criminal assizes in front of Judge Indra Hariprashad-Charles who has since left the Territory for another jurisdiction. However, his lawyer, Herbert McKenzie had stated that his client pleaded before Justice Olivetti and from his understanding Simon should be sentenced by her.

Meanwhile, Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin on Tuesday October 4, 2011, had indicated to the court that the Crown still intended to indict the defendant on assault occasioning actual bodily harm, unlawful possession of explosives and carrying an unlicensed firearm.

His other alleged accomplices – Ramon George, Gerald Huggins and Courtney Meade – are yet to be arraigned.

The four men during the wee hours of November 24, 2010 allegedly stormed into the Road Town Police Station and in the process allegedly asked the location of confiscated cocaine.

Three of the four accused men allegedly entered the Road Town Police station compound with masks, a handgun and other weapons.

In recounting the incident, Commissioner of Police Reynell Frazer had disclosed, “They had climbed the perimeter fencing and were subject of camera surveillance. Armed officers at the station moved swiftly to apprehend the intruders and within three minutes the suspects were arrested and in handcuffs. Unfortunately, the front desk officer was assaulted by the suspects before they were subdued.”
