ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Despite being down at the half and having to watch helpless as ESHS had 4 potentially game winning free throws as the clock ran down And One held on to record a 74-73 victory in the BVI basketball Federation’s Summer League on Friday June 15, 2012.

With many fans eagerly awaiting the weekend’s clash between Mega Mix and East’s not many were on hand to witness a pulsating match with no quarter asked or given.

Kevon Lettsome drove to the And One basket with 57 seconds left and his team down by 2 points. He drew a foul, but only found the basket with one of the two free throws to make it 74-73. Then with less than 20 seconds left the same player was awarded two more throws and missed both much to the relief of And One.

Albert Hatchett led And One with 21 points and 8 rebounds as they staged a fourth quarter comeback having been down 4 at the end of the third. Sheldeen Joseph scored 6 of her 10 points in the 4th and with Juron Jones scoring 13 they had just enough game to hold off the Rams.

Lettsome finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds for ESHS, whilst Romain Minott added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Nkosane Stapleton hit 12 points and Kevin Jones 11.

The Rams out stole their opponents by 33 to 16, but made only 505 of their free throws and were out rebounded 50-43.

Ray Victor added 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists and Rowan Victor scored 12 points. The Kings were indebted to a third quarter 7 point advantage to secure the win despite Sean Woods finishing strong and scoring 22 points. Calvin Smith added 18 with 12 rebounds and Jamaal Serrant scored 13.

The Hawks then rounded off the night with an 80-86 win against the Young Gunners. Ryan Alfred scored 21 points, Javier Martinez 16, Kadeem Jones 21 and Shakiel Humphrey 15 for the Hawks who scored 50 first half points and held on to win outright. The first period of added time ended at 41 each and then VG pulled away to outscore their opponents 10-6 in the “6th quarter”.

In the Junior Division, Another Level then beat the Junior Mystics 93-73. Revaughn Garraway’s 24, Terrique Wattley’s 24 and Sekayi Peterson’s 21 points proving too much for the Mystics to handle. Kimron Telemaque scored 19 and both Kenya Achom and Paul Bridgwater scored 18 for the Mystics.

The two Senior Division matches saw reasonably comfortable wins for Legs and Mega Mix.

The Legs cruised to a 102- 74 victory over All Ah Wee led by Khalid Gerrard’s 36 points and 11 rebounds. He also added 8 assists and Kennedy Bass notched 21 points and 13 rebounds. Trevon Lewis, Dione Blyden and Rhennie Phipp all reached double figures with Phipp adding 10 rebounds. For All Ah Wee Aubrey Daniels Senior scored 24 and Ricky Mabry 20.

The Mega Mix clash with East was a much tighter, tenser affair with the scores locked at 49-49 at the half. The third quarter was even and then the Mix turned on the afterburners to record a 101-93 triumph.

Kelvin Samuel scored 27 points with 7 rebounds, Halstead Chiverton added 19 points, Steve Parillon 17 with 10 rebounds and Douron Phillip 13 for the Mix, who were out rebounded 59-46, out blocked and had less assists, but shot for the basket with much more precision to gain the win.

Kamaoi Stevens added 16, Jahmari Rivera 14 and Dwayne Stoutt 10 for the Starz who led from the off and were never seriously threatened by the Playaz. Anthony Hodge did record 16 points and 13 rebounds, but only Jerome Malone and Tyree Maduro made other significant contributions.

The Rebels then recorded a rare victory albeit over the HLSCC Stingrays by a score line of 97-50. Sean Woods scored a massive 34 points; Akeem Titley added 13 and Damien Parillon finished with 12. For the Stingrays it was another Reg
Penn show as he scored 19 points with 18 rebounds whilst Dwayne Jennings finished with 10.

The weekend concluded with The Kings getting their second win, this time against the Latinos, 101-76. The Kings out rebounded the Latinos 44-27, and hit 86 per cent from the free throw line to stamp their authority on the game.

The Latinos made just 50% of theirs and only got in one block as they conceded the court to Mackensie Baltimore’s 20 points and 10 rebounds. Rowan and Ray Victor both scored 19, Jevonne Demming 17 and Wuli Frometta also got 17. Sandy Nadal scored 21 for the Latinos and Jose Acevedo finished with 15.
