SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – The elderly, the feeble and those who will be working at polling stations on June 8, 2015 have begun to cast their ballots as advance voting got underway across the territory today June 5, 2015 ahead of Monday’s official polling day.

Advance Polling Day, according to Elections Supervisor Juliette Penn, is held specifically to allow seniors and persons who need extra assistance to vote. It is the day allotted for persons who would need some extra time with the presiding officer or help from a friend.

The Amendments to the Elections Act of 1994 permits a voter who is incapacitated by reason of being an elderly person, illiterate or any physical cause to be able to vote with the assistance of a friend. The term ‘friend’ includes family and relatives.  This category of voter has the option to take advantage of Advance Polling Day.

Advance Polling Day is also for election officers and police officers who will be working on Polling Day, Monday, June 8.

Meanwhile, the Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre in Sea Cows Bay had a steady stream of persons considered aged or in need of assistance who turned up to cast their ballot.

They came to vote after being inundated for the past four weeks with a battery of radio advertisements and infomercials and night after night of political rallies in various communities in the district and throughout the territory.

When this news site turned up, the line at the centre was moving somewhat slower than expected with frustrated persons asking how many officials were there to deal with voters.

In addition, there was a bit of confusion as to whose turn it was in the line but eventually this was straightened out among the persons waiting themselves as they ascertained who arrived at the centre before whom.

Following the casting of their votes, the elderly and infirm had to be helped to wheelchairs and into vehicles to make their way home.

There was also an early turnout at the polling station at the House of Assembly chambers in Road Town.

Elections Supervisor Juliette Penn is to host a press conference at 4:15 today to inform the territory about the day’s advance polling and further preparations for Monday June 8, 2015.

the elderly are usually wise enough to see through the false promises of those in power who seek desperately to cling to that power

Although its the right for ever individuals to vote, its sad to see some of these older folks hardly could walk some of them don't even make it out to church anymore but we get them out their bed to come vote. I am sure some of these politician don't even go and visit them. Secondly why cant they have an absentee ballot for these elderly people? Another thing all the campaigning they all doing has anyone seek to implement all building in the territories is handicap accessible.

They are probably ecstatic to be taken out of the home and given an opportunity to cast a vote. It is a privilege to vote.

Yes, he was blatantly doing so and in direct contravention of the law. But, of course nobody was strong-willed enough to do anything about it. So, left unchecked, he was just up and down harassing the poor people. That was just plain out WRONG!

You should have seen him meeting, greeting and siting with the voters with no interference from the election officers. Of course not, they were all hand picked.

I just hope the ballot boxes are being held at the police station like they are supposed to. We are too small of a country to discount family and party affiliations, especially if those parties put us there

As expected the Governor will not do anything about it. These people should not be interfering or influencing the voters like that. Look at how the voter having to squeeze by mark. We if nothing is being done about it then all candidates should be doing the same.
