One resident surely did not forget his past as he was able to demonstrate how to set up a fowl trap without the aid of any of the seniors. Photo: VINO

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The turnout of seniors for the annual Open House of the Adina Donovan Home held yesterday May 20, 2014 was described as excellent.
Items borrowed from the popular community spirited man, Mr Reole Frett aka Limp Jack have been credited for the staging of the event, said to be the largest ever.
The turnout of supporters was excellent but it was the opinion of the acting Manager of the Home Mrs Jacqueline Donovan that there could have been a better turnout of seniors had the activity been held on the regular days when they are accustomed to being out.
“But never mind that it was a great turnout today and we are happy that everyone had a great time,” she told this news site.
She said the main aim of the activity was to showcase things of time gone by to keep them fresh in the minds of the residents of the home, “So as they grow older they wouldn’t forget that,” said Ms Donovan. “It’s for us to remember our culture; if we lose our culture we have nothing.”
The activity is held annually in the month of May in observance of Senior’s Month. However, according to Donovan, the focus was big on the Culture of the Virgin Islands. The display of a wide variety of items belonging to Mr Frett did not fail to capture the curious minds of many.
Among those impressed by the display was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Ms Petrona N. Davies who described it as ‘unlike any other ever staged’.
The display included items of handicraft, utensils used ‘back in the days’ like the out toilet, potties and cans used to relieve oneself, various old time household appliances of stoves, night lamps and clothes irons. Other items were traps used for catching fowls, donkey straps with mango trays, water can among many others.
“It was actually my first open house experience and I think we did pretty ok,” said assistant Manager Ms Crystal R. Vanterpool-Williams. “The theme was back in the day and I think the cultural display as you can see we stuck to it. The seniors were pleased and the food was great,” she added.
The days was also filled with a number of cultural items with performances by Mr Stoutt the story and joke teller, Ebenezer Thomas and Althea Scatliffe Primary Schools, a drama titled ‘Pass it on’ by Ms Jenny Wheatley, in addition to other songs and drama pieces.
