‘9th District also neglected by NDP’ – Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE
The political icon was speaking at a VIP rally in North Sound, Virgin Gorda on Monday May 25, 2015 which featured the VIP’s candidate for the Ninth District Elton L. Sprauve aka ‘All Out’.
Along the campaign trail, the District Representatives for District One- Honourable Andrew A. Fahie, District Two- Honourable J. Alvin Christopher and District Three- Honourable Julian Fraser RA have all complained about the neglect that their districts face from the Government in terms of making resources available.
“Now I have heard persons say that District One, District Two and District Three didn’t get anything…so was District Nine in the last three years…didn’t get anything,” said Honourable O’Neal.
“I begged and I begged. For instance the [Principal] of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre – Primary Division…he has to travel from over the hill to the Valley and when it rains he can’t even carry his car up to his house. I begged and I wrote, I prayed to the Minister, ‘help the young man’. Will you believe when I tackled him about it he said that he sent the men to work but they went to the wrong road,” said Honourable O’Neal.
He reminded that when the post office was being built and the VIP lost the election the structure remained with a lot of "green stuff growing over it" but he said the building was eventually finished.
Fraser no Hitler
Honourable O’Neal said there is an effort being made on the part of the ruling NDP administration to make the Chairman of the VIP appear to be a ‘Hitler’. “They are trying to get the people’s mind turned against him. But let me tell you this, Mr Fraser did not take members of Council out to Beef Island to ask the Governor to get rid of me. He did not do that…and I know the whole story of what they did,” said Honourable O’Neal.
At almost all of their campaign meetings, the NDP has been bashing Honourable Fraser, using a number of derogatory names in an effort to vilify the man many see as the next Premier of the Virgin Islands.
The House of Assembly gone to the dogs
Hon Premier said the standard and the discipline of the House of Assembly have gone to the dogs. “We need to bring back [standards and discipline] because this is the House where we are passing laws and you can’t have that kind of behaviour."
Meanwhile, Hon Fraser said he is happy with the team that the VIP has put together and he is hopeful that they are able to restore dignity to the House.
Members of the House of Assembly from the Government side have been criticised for showing blatant disrespect not only for members of the Opposition but for the House itself. Many radio talk show hosts have condemned the lack of decorum in the House and most recently Territorial At Large candidate Dancia Penn also highlighted the troubling issue.
The NDP has been accused of cultivating a culture of disrespect that can be traced back to the 2011 elections campaign when the then At Large candidate Myron V. Walwyn called the then Premier Hon O'Neal an 'emperor without clothes' and another NDP candidate labelled the then Deputy Premier Dancia Penn 'an empty kerosene can'.
