6-yr-old girl’s fight with cancer inspires church
Aviyah was a guest of the BVI Cancer Society at church on Sunday October 4, 2015 and was accompanied by her mother Thelma O. Ottley who had no reservation about her daughter’s story being shared with the church and by extension the general public.
Inspiring story
It was too much of an emotional moment for the mother who did not speak of her daughter’s journey to conquer ovarian cancer to the point of being in the recessional stage today. But she sat with tears filled eyes as President of the BVI Cancer Society Ms Gloria A. Fahie told the church how learning of Aviyah’s battle with cancer has given her renewed energy and courage to continue to be a strong advocate for cancer awareness in the Virgin Islands (British).
Ms Fahie related that it was at a photo shoot in the East End community for cancer survivors where she noticed the seven year old among the group and was forced to ask who she was. She said on hearing of the child’s story she felt like a new person, re-energised to continue to fight.
“When I found out that this little girl had cancer, all the tiredness left my body. I was rejuvenated with a fresh spirit, a spirit of help, a spirit of energy, a spirit of positivity,” said Ms Fahie.
It was the child’s character at the time that also moved all those present in church as she had said to Ms Fahie at the photo shoot, “I am not sick,” and displayed a very jovial disposition, prancing, and being merry as any other child her age. But it’s the many scars on her little tummy that tell her story the most.
Dressed in her beautiful pink dress and compliment by a tiara presented by our reporter and a pink rose in her thick hair, Aviyah stepped up to the pulpit to join Ms Fahie wearing a bright smile and displaying a spirit of boldness. The church members rose again to their feet in worship to the point of Bishop Aludus Todman reaching out in prayer for the child.
Cancer affecting even young children & babies
Ms Fahie was very emotional when speaking of her discovering some 5 years ago that she had breast cancer to the point of having to remove one of her breasts but became even more emotional when informing the church that there were very young children living with cancer of some form. “It’s very hard as an adult for someone to tell you look you have cancer but believe it or not it’s happening to kids, children, babies.”
“No matter if you are dying from cancer, live life to the best of your ability,” said Ms Fahie as she read a statement that was the theme for the church ‘Our commitment is to live for one another’. “And that is the directive God has given us, be our sisters and our brothers keepers.”
She reiterated that although the month of October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The BVI the Cancer society is advocating for all forms of cancers. “Our theme this year is focusing on all cancers, if you know of anyone who has any type of cancer I am begging you to get involved.”
She announced the BVI Cancer Society’s Walk for a Cure that is scheduled for October 24, 2015 where she said she expects to see all the members of the church present. “We help persons at the Cancer Society by offering assistance to any person that comes to us with cancer. I do not turn anyone back because I made a promise to God.”

This has opened my awareness as I know of a child showing some certain symptoms and the mother is 100% the child has never been interfered with but sources are only looking at molestation. When a person know that their hands are clean, but the symptoms are compared to something otherwise, it can be torture, while all the while, the infant is suffering. This is an eye opener.
I really do wish that some of you people would think outside of the box of your medieval religion which seems to keep you all penned into. Firstly ask the question why if your great god existed why would he be so cruel to inflict such a horrendous disease on such a sweet and innocent child? The recovery of this child is to do with Science and the doctors and researchers that made it possible, not through prayer or the invisible fairy in the sky.
Why would such a "loving god" allow so many innocent children to starve, to be sick, to be mistreated? Oh yes he works in mysterious ways, so mysterious the real mystery is how grown adults and some with education can believe in such foolishness. Keep throwing your money to the church so that your pastors can live their lavish lifestyles instead of throwing that money to actually help the needy.
