CHRISTIANSTED, ST Croix, USVI - A 55-year-old woman from St. Croix was the 26th person to die from COVID-19 related causes in the U.S. Virgin Islands, announced the V.I. Department of Health Thursday night, March 25, 2021.

The USVI Department of Health (DOH). said, "After further investigating [the] cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s twenty-sixth death related to Covid-19. The deceased is a 55-year-old female on St. Croix."

The 25th COVID-19 related fatality was announced on February 10 — a 76-year-old man from St. Croix — which was a month after the 24th victim, which D.O.H. confirmed was a 78-year-old woman from St. Croix.

DOH. did not reveal whether the latest victim had other maladies that may have been exacerbated by the virus.

According to data firm Statista, between the beginning of January 2020 and March 17, 2021, of 517,575 deaths caused by COVID-19 in the United States, around 160,729 had occurred among those aged 85 years and older; 140,000 were between the ages of 75-84; 113,000 between 65-74, and 77,000 between 50-64 years old. Just under 15,000 deaths were people between the ages of 40-49, just over 5,000 between the ages of 30-39; less than 2,000 between the ages of 18-29, and 226 between 0-17 years old.

DOH urged Virgin Islanders to continue to follow COVID-19 protocols as it works to slow the spread of the disease.

The territory had 43 active cases as of Wednesday, with the majority of infections - thirty-eight being reported on St. Croix, followed by three on St. Thomas and none on St. John. D.O.H. data says 2,812 people have recovered from the virus, with a total of 66,751 tests performed.

There were no pending test results as of Wednesday, according to the DOH data.

The territory's 26 Covid-19 deaths breakdown is as follows: 15 on St. Thomas, 10 on St. Croix and 1 on St. John.
