49th Street rout Bulldogs to win EE/LL bball Championship!
Coach Wasi Charlesworth of 49th Street complained in the previous game that his team had not been playing as a unit but praised their general cohesion this time around as they pulled off a thrilling win.
Runners-up in last year’s tournament, 49th Street were made to play a full best of five championship round to prove their mettle against the upstart Bulldogs. The winning team lifted the Championship trophy and took home $1000 courtesy of LIME.
“We decided to play team ball. Last game we let it get away from us and played a lot of selfish ball so came out and played a lot of team ball and moved the ball around and that made the game pretty easy for us,” Charlesworth commented.
Before a packed gymnasium, 49th Street set the pace from early on with a 10-0 run in the first quarter that saw an untidy looking Bulldogs seeking to regroup. The Bulldogs drew within two points near halftime but that was as close as they were allowed throughout the game.
David Lettsome aka Bolo was once again in the points with a game high double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. He received strong support from teammates Asheed Frett (17 points) and Jahmal Rabsatt (12 points).
Bulldogs’ Travis Isaac topped his team’s scoring with 18 points but couldn’t get much more than Cedric King’s 11 points from his other teammates.
Eighth District Representative Hon Marlon A. Penn said after the game that this was one of the most exciting tournaments he had witnessed for the Christmas league.
Meanwhile Chino Woods of The Wash grabbed the league MVP prize while Eustace ‘Boss’ Freeman won the best centre prize.
