‎3rd form student of ESHS slaps teacher

This news site has confirmed that a third form student of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) slapped Home Economics Teacher Mrs Camille Gumbs. Photo: VINO/File
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - This news site has confirmed from its many reliable sources in the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) that a third form student slapped Home Economics Teacher Mrs Camille Gumbs today June 13, 2014.

According to our reliable sources the teacher of over 20 years at the school observed the third former loitering in the compound of the school and told her to go to her classroom.

The child allegedly refused following repeated admonishment and as the teacher shook the chair the child was on, she was given a ‘hot’ slap by the student, causing the teacher's face to be swollen.

The teacher was advised to inform the acting Principal of the School Mr Wade W. Tobin and at the same time file a report with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

Attempts by the news site to reach ‎Mr Tobin and Mrs Gumbs have proved futile up to press time.

Further details will be posted as they become available.

That child needs to be expelled...period. She is too rude and lacks discipline. However, they are allowed to get away with this type of behavior because the ACTOR of a principal always turn a blind eye to such matters. This is only the beginning if they continue to let that principal remain at the helm. Stay tuned.....

The sad truth is that our current Minister of Education is in full support of such unruly behavior as he never rises in support of his teachers. Let's see how long it will take him to issues a press release condemning such behaviors. I will not be surprised if he chooses to keep silent on the matter.

As a Youth I'd say she didn't get slap hard enough...you a teacher, stay in your lane, you ain't no damn principal

As a Maturing person i'd say this child needs to be disciplined, if you're big enough to be hitting adults then you're too big for school...go look a job

Wonder what Tobin will be doing Lol

I see where your argument is looking at both sides of the coin, but my concern and question is this. Are you saying that teachers have no right to discipline, reprimand or approach a student who is doing something they ought not do? What does "stay in your lane" really mean?

You sound like an idiot. Every teacher has the authority to send a child to class; to reprimand them for loitering or for disobeying any school rule. Stop showing your stupid side.

To the people talking about corporal punishment. Since when would slapping back the child make him/her any better off than before? The problem in the BVI isn't being able to lash a child in school, it starts in the homes. The Government didn't say we can't spank our kids at home, they said you can't spank them in school which is already the norm. If you have to be physically punishing a child all the time then something is wrong with that home and the parents are the one that are responsible. We get so accustomed of doing shit and being bailed out that we accept it as the norm. They just announced the two top students graduating from Secondary school. Ask them if their Teachers had to buss their ass in order for them to learn. I'm sure they left their parents house with a mandate to learn "OR ELSE>>.." So, beating kids in school doesn't help anything. IF the kids are disrespectful and don't want to change, you kick them out and let their parents arrange alternate education for them, simple.

you have excellent points. I say respect begins at home. Children model what they learn or see at home and bring it to school. Although I do not condone hitting a teacher (or a child for that matter), I think there is something greater to this story.

Any child that hits a teacher does not need to be in school., they need to be out working. Suspend ya say no way. This is immediate expulsion. The minister of education say no one should be out when it's testing so students run the route when it's test time cause the minister say they cannot be put out and if they are out you reward them by giving them the test when they come back in.....the minister is clearly out of touch when it comes to education and what works....
This is sad that after educating our children for 30+ years Mrs. Gumbs is assaulted by a female student. Anyone who knows Mrs. Gumbs knows she doesn't hit students, she talks and talks and then talks some more.
I am waiting to see what Mr. Minister is going to do with this young lady. I not even saying what Mr. Tobin going to do cause if it was up to him she would have been gone but whatever he does the minister undo so if I was him I would let them handle it.
Teachers it's time to March. Enough is enough. How much longer are you going to sit and allow this man to destroy what you have worked so hard to build. Where is the Teachers Union? Exam or no exam nothing should be done until this woman is put out from amoung children.

Its going to get worse at ESHS. just wait until they add the extra year. many of the children are already of voting age and dont think anyone should talk to them. they are men and women but the minister feel they should stay in school no matter their age, their performance or their behaviour. An additional year is only going to create more problems. you could give some of these children ten additional years it wont make a difference. they just not interested in education. they come to school loiter, gamble in the female bathrooms, smoke, drink, sexually assault peoples children and abuse the teachers. the school is in a crisis but guess what. we live in nature-'s little secrets.

We are children we make mistakes but one thing i know we get a chance to go up and learn from it. The statements that was made here are lies there are a lot of witnesses. We are children not animal to be dragged around. There are ways to talk to us and deal with us its nothing to do with who we are where we come from but u know what people already did it to god they judged him and condemed him. For the person who ran to the news and told the lie i pray for u. Pray none of u fall in any problem or be judge like what u doin here. The funniest thing these blogs are a problem and people outside of us will say wow whats going on there in that islands its just making it bad for us.This was so uncall for. This too shall pass and i know the truth and it will set us free.

Your comment is a disaster waiting to happen. Check your oxford dictionary to find out the meaning of mistake. This is purely the issue of value system. It is personality disorder that can only be stopped when you measure the bad attitude with the right punishment. Discipline this child. Don't spare the rod. Get her to sweep the streets and pick thrash for 1 hour daily over a period of 1 month. While doing this, she must attend her classes. Finally, she must stand before the student assembly and apologize on her knees to Mrs. Gumbs.

Teachers, hear what I say. Prepare your lesson plans, teach your lessons and mind your business there after. It is no longer your responsibility to train or correct anybody's child. Our children are rude and the minister knows that. That's why he is busy making whatever provisions he can to ensure that they are not accountable for their actions. However, if a teacher dares to slap a child, the minister will eat that teacher alive. Bear with it. He will hopefully be gone within two years.

Folk this is a very serious matter. It's very sad that some people find it funny. This country is heading down a destructive path. Children no longer have respect for those in authority or for teachers. Parents we are lacking in some way or the other. Gone are the days when you can discipline or talk to any child on the street and they listen. We will soon have teachers in school that don't give a damn. If you look at the teacher's hand book everyone has right but the teacher. Talks about children and parents rights and teachers are forgotten. Charges are always being made to protect the child what about the teacher? Lord have mercy on us heading down a destructive pathway. I am going to take care of my children the same way my mother taught and discipline me. The little cut ass only made me a better person. I pray more parents do the same.

This girl is obviously disrespectful and needs to be punished but I don't think expulsion is the answer, I think suspension is. However it's sad how nowadays the ESHS is only being shown in a negative light, why not praise the students who do well...let's say make the honor roll...these children spaz out to gain attention to be called "real." Trust me if we stop giving the negative things light and focus on the students that do well, it would become a trend for these students to want to go to class more because they will be recognized on vino or bvi news for something good and not for slapping a teacher...then others who caz the trouble will say to themselves "nobody ain studying me", and so then, because they like the attention they'll go after it in a positive way.
  • uhmmm (16/06/2014, 03:46) Like (2) Dislike (1) Reply
The student should have not hit the teacher and should be punished with suspension and not expulsion. We need to be consistent, either we expel or we suspend for situations like these (except for overboard situations) However, if the teacher hit the student first she should also be suspended because that has happened before. An incident have happened before where the teacher slapped a student because the student asked a question regarding a question on the exam that he needed clarity about, while doing the exam. The teacher was then suspended. P.S. when I was in ESHS, I was in the class as well as many others. But we never hear about when the teacher messes up, only when the student does. We cant be hypocrites! and have double standards! This teacher only got suspended (and not fired, equivalent to expulsion for a student) for slapping a student and had no right motives to do so, except the fact that the teacher didn't think he should have asked the question. It's not like the student said something disrespectful to the teacher. That's sad!
