BERBICE, Guyana - An eighteen-year-old youth who was part of election protest action in Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice, Guyana on Friday, March 6, 2020, was shot and killed by a member of the Guyana Police Force after he reportedly chopped and attacked officers with a cutlass.

The dead man has been identified as Seedat Hansraj and in a statement, the Guyana Police Force explained that at around 19:40hrs on Friday, Police Ranks while performing their duties at Cotton Tree Public Road, came under attack by the protesters.

Unverified results declared

Since Friday morning, hundreds of opposition People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) protesters took to the streets in various parts of the country, burning vehicles, tires and blocking roads to illustrate their displeasure with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and its handling the results of the March 2 polls.

GECOM on Thursday, March 5, 2020, through its Returning Officer, declared the Region 4 results without complete verification, putting the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) government into the lead to win the 2020 elections.

The Police Force said moments before the attack, officers maintaining order were attacked by a group of men armed with cutlasses, wood, iron and were forced to discharge their weapons into the air to disperse “the very hostile and aggressive crowd,” at around 19:40hrs.

The cops and Hansraj were taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where the young man was pronounced dead on arrival. The ranks remain in the hospital and are said to be in a stable condition.

Verify Region 4 results - International Observers

Meanwhile, international bodies and international Observer Missions have been mounting pressure on GECOM to return to the verification of Region 4 results ahead of the official announcement of the 2020 elections winner.

In a joint statement, observer missions including those from the Commonwealth, the European Union, the Organization of American States, and The Carter Center all want the tabulation of results for the election in Region 4 to go through the proper verification process.

If not, they believe the result of the elections cannot be credibly declared, “Until this transparent process takes place, the counting of votes recorded for Region 4 remains incomplete”, the Observers said.

Political parties call for peace

As protest action increased on Friday, both the main opposition PPP/C  and the APNU+AFC Government reiterated calls for their supporters to remain calm after the Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo had earlier told his supporters to protest against the David A. Granger Government and alleged election fraud at GECOM.

Several other Police were injured and one stabbed in the protests that saw ranks running for cover as opposition PPP/C protesters showered them with bricks, glass bottles and other debris.

Four school children were also reportedly hospitalised after their state-runned school bus service came under attack in Berbice.

They’re some of the most pathetic people on earth. Eternally victims. Uneducated yet boast about their education system and most can barely speak or spell correctly. Always angry. Extremely violent. Racists and prejudice. The list of bad qualities can go on until the end of time. Just ew. Take a look at their news daily. They’re very sick and ignorant people.

And so are many of the other upper Caribbean islands. Across the board of blind ignorance. There has to be a sound psychological and historical reason.

How can you attack a school bus with children in it? I have no sympathy for these criminals and hope the cowards go to hell on a speed boat.

I keep reading about attacking a bus but never once about anyone invading a school full of children did u adk yourself why this was deliberately left out and who invade the bushlot school. Also what i was made to understand was that the young man kilked was defending his mother who was being beaten by the said policeman that got chopoed. Wondeting why all this was deliberately left out of the news.

Guiana is at the dawn of its horizon with discovery of its oil.
The possibility of becoming the wealthiest in the caribbean is certain.
With their endemic racism and propensity for unbridled violence, semi illiteracy, its wealth will not be trickling down much .Poverty and migration will continue as it is now and we will continue to be the brunt of their illusionary rants about their speciallness and superiority. Pathetic indeed.

Reading these news I am thankful for the BVI. We just came out of Black history month where there were great programmes by knowledgeable local minds urging us to be vigilant. I also see that some persons who live here and are from that country are writing on facebook with racial undertones. Though they are targeting the black brothers of their country, i take offence because the BVI is in my opinion a leader in this Caribbean region and yes my ancestors who built it were all black.
I am urging our Immigration Department to take note of the hate that we are letting in among us. Most Virgin Islanders are black and we are intelligent and built a nation where some of those people who I see are calling black people monkey are running to.

Those countries are independent countries with a number of issues that you might not even be aware of. The BVI is basically playing house under the rulership of a colonial power. How are we leaders?

Not every Guyanese is a racist. Majority of this hate for black and coolie people is coming from the older uneducated generation who just vote based on race rather than political or educational views and it is these people who have pushed their mentality unto their children and grand children. Guyana has such a diverse group of races man, and if you go into the schools and workplaces that have younger people, racism just doesn't exist. So no, don't think all Guyanese are racist.

You will never see the Honourable Andrew Fahie using government funds or tax payers money and purchase school busses and put his name and picture on it and calling it Andrew Fahie School Bus.
