2012 Music Fest could be downgraded to one day!
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Newly elected president of the Cane Garden Bay Music Fest, Carnel Clyne, has revealed that this year’s Music Fest could be reduced to one day, if major sponsors can’t foot the bill.
In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online yesterday, March 6, 2012, Clyne stated that after holding discussions with Government officials about sponsorship last week, he was given the news that Government could not give “the amount of funding like before.”
“I understand their dilemma. We are in an economic crunch, so as of now we are looking at holding it for one day. However, I have to meet with other major sponsors this week and hopefully if everything goes according to plan we could have a two day affair. But for now Music Fest stands at one evening,” Clyne explained.
Despite the backlash anticipated by some, the committee’s president said cancelling this year’s event was not an option.
“We want to keep it alive,” he stated. Over the past 11 years, Music Fest has been a three day musical extravaganza, which usually cost about $600,000.
Meanwhile, Clyne remains tight-lipped about the promoter who will be organizing the musical event. He did state though that he has asked the individual to come up with a proposal that would fit a $200,000 budget.
And while he is hopeful that American R&B singer Chris Brown can be lured into coming, Clyne added, “He will be ideal for the younger folks while we are considering Beres Hammond for the mature folks.” Local artistes, as usual, will enjoy the spotlight as well.
According to the new president, the promoter will get back to him as soon as possible. “It takes about $600,000 to put on a three night event. You do the math,” he further stated.
When asked about the monies from last year’s event to offset some of the expenses, Clyne replied, “This is a brand new committee.”
The event will also be held at its enclosed location in CGB, and if it’s for one evening it will be held the last Saturday in May and two days – Friday and Saturday.
As for the rest of the committee, Clyne said they are ready for anything and include Vice President Neil Cline; Treasurer Jennifer O’Neal; Secretary Krisha Hodge; Public Relations Jasmine Perez and members Al Henley and Daniel ‘Pops’ Cline.
Over the years En Vougue, the late Lucky Dube, Roberta Flax, Luciano, Wyclef and Damian ‘Gong’ Marley, among others, have performed at what had become a prime musical event in the VI.
